  1. Post update

    Federer 6-4 3-2 Otte*

Federer is gliding through service games. Has a player ever made a sport look so good?

  2. Post update

    *Federer 6-4 2-2 Otte

Skiing legend Lindsey Vonn is courtside watching this one. She’s a self-proclaimed Federer fan.

Oscar Otte is too. He says Federer is his idol. He’s continuing to go toe-to-toe with the Swiss with more powerful hitting.

  3. Post update

    Federer 6-4 2-1 Otte*

The quickest of quick games for Federer.

Of course you can get in touch in the usual ways today. Where are you following from? Who are you backing for the title? What have you made of this match?

  4. Post update

    *Federer 6-4 1-1 Otte

Federer glances up at the umpire after a close call goes against him. Ozzie Otte is confident it was long and after a closer inspection the umpire agrees.

Roger then completely fools his opponent with a drop shot at the end of the game, with Otte slipping and stumbling like he’s on ice not clay, but the ball clips the tape and falls back on the Swiss’ side.

  5. Post update

    Federer 6-4 1-0 Otte*

Oh that is delightful. There’s a little bit of showboating in this. Federer rips a stunning backhand drop shot and it almost spins enough to come back over the net.

There’s no let up at the start of the second set for Oscar Otte to get a look in.

  6. Game and first set – Federer

    *Federer 6-4 0-0 Otte

German Oscar Otte played a close to perfect opening set but he’s lost it. A couple of unforced errors creep as the pressure cranks up and that’s all the great man needs.

    Roger Federer hits the front.

  7. Post update

    Federer 5-4 Otte*

Otte’s head rocks back as a Fed forehand beats him. He’s done that to plenty of others before.

Two set points to Roger Federer

  8. Post update

    Federer 5-4 Otte*

“Let’s go Roger, let’s go,” chants a lone voice in the stands.

The wind picks up at the worst possible time for Oscar Otte, who is serving to stay in the set.

Federer takes the first point. 0-15.

  9. Post update

    Federer 5-4 Otte*

Oscar Otte gets the full taste of what it’s like to play Roger Federer here. The 20-time Grand Slam champ picks one up off his shoelaces and whips it into corner.

Federer still finds himself at 40-30 – is this a slight bit of pressure? Maybe but it’s quickly snuffed out. A fizzing second serve is unreturnable.

  10. Post update

    *Federer 4-4 Otte

Federer takes a deep breath after seeing another powerful serve take a point. He must be expecting a dip from his opponent who is ranked 144th in the world.

The Swiss great looks calm but gets a little wild with a forehand. That’s way long.

We’re still level as we head to the business end of this set.

  11. Post update

    Federer 4-3 Otte*

It’s a fairly common opinion that Roger Federer’s worst surface is clay but his record is not to be sniffed at. Here he’s going for his 67th win at Roland Garros. The only man that can better that record is Rafael Nadal.

Fed is being made to work. A forehand winner is needed to clinch this game.

  12. Post update

    *Federer 3-3 Otte

Don’t feed the forehand. Fed gobbles up a return early to put his pressure on his opponent.

But once again Oscar Otte chooses to attack his way out of trouble. He blasts a few more down over the net. The game ends with a 130mph ace from the German.

Roger won’t be gifted this, it seems.

  13. Post update

    Federer 3-2 Otte*

Federer has settled in well here. Once again there is little sign of clay-court rustiness. A hold to love edges him back in front.

  14. Otte holds

    *Federer 2-2 Otte

Nicely played from Oscar Otte. He fights off the tricky situation with relative ease thanks to another big first serve.

  15. Post update

    Federer 2-1 Otte*

Federer is looking old school today in his white t-shirt with beigey-grey trim and matching shorts and headband.

He slides up to the net beautifully through the red dirt and the swishes away a backhand winner before repeating the trick on the forehand with similar style.

    Deuce.

  16. Post update

    Federer 2-1 Otte*

But Roger Federer has seen many challengers come and try this before and on the vast majority of occasions he has had the answers.

Roger stands and watches a ball sail long over the baseline and calmly struts to his chair.

  17. Post update

    *Federer 1-1 Otte

Blimey. The French crowd gasps as Oscar Otte hammers a return back at the Swiss great. Federer manages to turn the rally in his favour but the German’s gameplan is clear.

    Don’t go down wondering.

    15-15.

  18. Post update

    *Federer 1-1 Otte

That’s a nerve-settler for the gangly Oscar Otte, dressed in a bright yellow t-shirt. His first serve finds the mark and Federer doesn’t get a sniff of an early break.

  19. Post update

    Federer 1-0 Otte*

Earlier on we saw Yannick Maden overawed when faced with the challenge of Rafael Nadal. He was brushed aside 6-1 6-2 6-4.

Oscar Otte meanwhile makes a decent start here, getting into the rallies and making Federer sweat but the Swiss bangs down an ace to seal the game.

  20. Post update

    *Federer 0-0 Otte

When Oscar Otte was knocked out in qualifying a few days ago he thought his tournament was over.

Now the lucky loser faces the greatest player of all time on one of the biggest courts of all.

    Roger Federer will serve first…
