The Brits in the crowd try to lift Edmund as he stands from his chair. He closes the gap back to one.

Cuevas 6-6 (4-2) Edmund*
A gift from the experienced Pablo Cuevas. He flops a double fault into the net.
But Kyle Edmund can’t take advantage. He makes an error of his own soon after and that means Cuevas is still ahead at the change of ends.

Groans from the crowd, a grimace from Edmund. That miscued smash could be a pivotal moment in this breaker.

Argh. Kyle Edmund plays the perfect point but then puts the smash into the net. That could be a big miss.

Cuevas has boshed 17 winners so far. I don’t know exactly how many have come off that backhand side – but it’s definitely in double figures.

Too casual! After Edmund gets a lucky deflection off the cord there are groans all around this court as Pablo Cuevas gets a little too clever and puts a sitter into the net.
That allows Edmund to wriggle free.
We’re going to a tie-break.

Cuevas 6-5 Edmund*
Crucial moments. Cuevas launches into a backhand and it’s too hot of Kyle Edmund to handle.
The crowd clap a beat.
Deuce.

Very tight in here. Queues are still snaking outside. Makes you wonder why this match wasn’t deemed big enough for the green Court Simonne Mathieu or gladiatorial Court One.

Cuevas 6-5 Edmund*
That’s some game from Pablo Cuevas under pressure. He hits his third ace and then a sumptuous backhand winner to clinch it. The Cuevas backhand has been the key shot so far. It’s a stunner.
The pressure now flips onto Kyle Edmund again.
Game and first set Azarenka
Osaka 4-6 Azarenka

She survived a little scare, but the first set goes to Victoria Azarenka.
Naomi Osaka previously held her serve to move within one game of Azarenka, but the Belarusian serves out the set to win 6-4.
This second set could prove to be quite the tasty battle as Osaka finally looks to have settled into this one.

From the seats inside court six which face Lenglen, you can see a big screen on the side on Roland Garros’s second show-court which is showing Osaka v Azarenka.
At the changeover, some fans on the opposite side clamber up and turn around to see what is going on with the world number one.
No-one cares when this match is back under way. Everyone is engrossed.

*Cuevas 5-5 Edmund
Eeeesh! You can’t beat a bit of luck every now and a again. At 30-15 a crucial and grueling rally ends with the ball clipping the tape and flopping onto Cuevas’ side, leaving the Uruguayan with no chance. Edmund holds up his hand to apologise but we know deep down he’s smiling.
Had that gone against Edmund it would have been 30-30. Instead he holds relatively comfortably.

Spanish speakers are sat all around the media seats on court six – including former world number 12 Feliciano Lopez.
Lopez, looking dapper in his checked trousers civvies, is Cuevas’s doubles partner.
“Que bien!” the bespectacled Lopez utters as his mate wallops a winner.
Roughly translated, using my GCSE Spanish, into colloquial English as ‘wow, that’s mint’.
