The Imo state governor, Emeka Ihedioha has denied ordering the demolition of the Akachi tower, which was the monument built by his predecessor, Rochas Okorocha. The demolition of the towers is coming barely 24 hours after Ihedioha was sworn into office on Wednesday, May 29, The Nation reports.
Many indigenes of the state have highly criticized the action, saying that the towers were built by public funds and as such should not be destroyed to get back at the previous administration.
It should be noted that the Akachi tower, which is one of the tourist attractions in the state, was being pulled down as at the time of writing this. The tower was built on a reclaimed dumpsite that was abandoned by the previous government before’s Okorocha’s administration.
During the demolition, soldiers stood guard to stop journalist from covering the exercise. The monument was one of the structures commissioned by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo just barely a week to its demolition.
There are fears in the state, that the new governor may also destroy other structures that were built by the previous government. Steve Osuji, the special adviser to the governor, however, said that Ihedioha is not aware of the demolition and he is still busy trying to settle into his new office.
Thebiafrastar earlier reported that Ihedioha was sworn in as the executive governor of the state. Ihedioha was sworn in at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, by the chief judge of the state, Paschal Nnadi The new governor sworn in on Wednesday, May 29, before a large crowd shortly after his deputy, Gerald Irona, took his oath of office and allegiance.
