The leader of the proscribed Biafra agitation group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has put the National Judiciary Council (NJC) on a strong blast, describing the body as a “corruption based” council.
Kanu, who is at present in the United Kingdom, has also ridiculed the judges in Nigeria, describing them as “corrupt”.
According to reports from Naija News, the IPOB leader made this
statement as he made a live broadcast on Radio Biafra over the weekend.
The broadcast of the Biafran leader was focused on Nigeria’s judiciary.
Nnamdi Kanu in the broadcast, said that the NJC in Nigeria is “based
on corruption” in respect to Justice Walter Onnoghen‘s resignation as
the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The IPOB leader further said that “none of the judges in Nigeria obey
the law”, noting that “everyone is corrupt in Nigeria” including
Justice Tanko Muhammad, the Acting CJN.
“Nigerian NJC is based on corruption, none of the judges in Nigeria obey the law. Everyone is corrupt,” he said.
Speaking also on the revoking of his bail by Justice Binta Nyako,
Kanu berated the judge, wondering why she would give such a judgment
even when her own child is currently facing trial.
Kanu said Justice Nyako has shown by her judgment that she is not a
mother, noting that she would have thought of her son’s case with the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and act like a mother.
Meanwhile, Naija News reports that the broadcast is coming after a
Federal High Court presided over by Justice Nyako in Abuja, Nigeria’s
capital, last month, revoked Kanu’s bail and also ordered his immediate
arrest.
The Justice Binta Nyako-led court gave the order while deploring the continued absence of Kanu from court.
Justice Nyako also revoked the bail she granted Kanu in 2017, and
directed that the proceedings of the trial will still continue even in
the IPOB leader’s absence.
It would be recalled that Kanu, who was charged to court for
treasonable felony by the federal government, was in the course of trial
granted bail on heath ground aside other conditions on April 25, 2017.
However, Kanu went underground in September 2017 following the
deployment of troops to the Southeast when his Umuahia country home was
allegedly raided by soldiers.
The pro-Biafra separatist was later seen in Jerusalem on October 19.
He made a Facebook broadcast on October 21 where he said he left
Nigeria because he could not get the necessary protection from the
court.
Following his absence, Kanu’s three sureties under a N100 million
bond each in aggregate of N300 million, have been in a legal battle to
show cause why they should not produce Kanu or individually forfeit
their bail bond to the Federal government.
However, after the ensuing legal fireworks by the sureties’ counsels
in the persons of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, a Jewish priest, Immanuel
Shalom and an accountant, Tochukwu Uchendu, the matter was adjourned
sine die.
But Nyako also affirmed that the court had separated Kanu’s trial
from other defendants since March 20, 2018, yet Kanu has continuously
failed to appear before the court.
The presiding judge, therefore, adjourned Kanu’s trial to June 18 for continuation of trial.
