Breaking News: Ronaldo has sights on Champions League after drought breaker

Breaking News: Ronaldo has sights on Champions League after drought breaker

MILAN (AP) — After finally getting off the mark for Juventus in the league, Cristiano Ronaldo has his sights set on his favorite competition: the Champions League.

Ronaldo was under pressure after three games without scoring for Juventus since his move from Real Madrid, but he broke his mini-drought with two goals in Sunday"s 2-1 win over Sassuolo in Serie A.

Next up for Juventus and Ronaldo is a trip to Valencia on Wednesday as the Champions League kicks off this week.

"I feel like that"s my home. It"s the competition that I love the most," Ronaldo said. "Let"s hope we have some luck, it will be a difficult group but I can"t wait."

Juventus has won the Serie A title for the last seven seasons — and the league and Italian Cup double for the past four — but has struggled to transfer that domestic supremacy to the European stage.

Juventus hasn"t won Europe"s premier club competition since 1996, although it has reached the final twice in the past four editions. Splashing out a Serie A record 112 million euro (then $131.5 million) for Ronaldo, the five-time Ballon d"Or winner, sent out a message of its intent to go one step further this time around.

Ronaldo certainly revels in the Champions League. Not only has he won the trophy four times in the past five seasons, but he is also the competition"s leading scorer with 120 goals.

And he appears to be getting into his stride at Juventus at just the right time.

His first goal was a simple tap-in but that appeared to unburden Ronaldo, who had played nearly 320 minutes of competitive football for Juventus without scoring, and he doubled his tally 15 minutes later.

That second goal showed the understanding that is developing between Ronaldo and his new teammates. Douglas Costa sparked a swift counterattack and picked out Emre Can, who spotted Ronaldo"s run and set up the Portugal forward for a diagonal shot.

Valencia knows what a scoring threat Ronaldo can be: he scored 15 goals in 18 appearances against them for Real Madrid.

Also in Group H are Swiss team Young Boys and Manchester United — the club with which Ronaldo won his first Champions League title in 2008.

GOALLESS

While Ronaldo may have found his scoring touch, two Serie A clubs have yet to find the back of the net.

Bologna and Frosinone have not scored in four matches and each club has one point, having played out a 0-0 draw last month.

Yet those clubs aren"t last in the Serie A standings as they each have two more points than Chievo Verona, which was deducted three points for false accounting.

COSTA"S UGLY EPISODE

Juventus looked brighter when Douglas Costa was introduced shortly after the hour mark and he started the move which led to the Bianconeri"s second goal.

However, the Brazil international faces at least a three-match ban after being sent off in stoppages after video review spotted he spat at Sassuolo midfielder Federico Di Francesco.

Shortly before the spitting incident Costa had also raised an elbow at the same player and attempted a head-butt.

"I was ugly, I am aware of that and I apologize to everyone for that," Costa said in an apology posted on Instagram. He notably did not mention Di Francesco in his message.

VAR PROBLEMS

More than a year after its inception in the Italian league, video technology is still causing issues.

Torino was furious when it had an early goal incorrectly disallowed during Sunday"s 1-1 draw at Udinese.

Television replays showed Alex Berenguer was onside when he headed in but as the whistle had already been blown, VAR could not be used.

"Last year we were punished in so many matches and we didn"t do anything because they told us that we need to wait for the system to grow," Torino director Gianluca Petrachi said. "But now? This year I expected something different.

"The referee blew the whistle right when the ball was going into the goal without even waiting for the action to be completed. We had 400 meetings in which it was always told to us that you can"t blow the whistle while the ball is going into the goal ... I"m for VAR in every sense but if we have it and we don"t use it, making shoddy errors, I don"t know what to think."

Inter Milan was also upset during a 1-0 loss to Parma when opposing defender Federico Dimarco appeared to handle the ball when clearing off the line against Ivan Perisic.

Referee Gianluca Manganiello communicated with the VAR official but opted not to view the footage and waved play on.

Dimarco — who could have been sent off — went on to score the winner.

Breaking News: 4 things we learnt from Manchester United’s victory over Watford

Breaking News: 4 things we learnt from Manchester United’s victory over Watford

Manchester United against Watford was a game of many parts and stories. United played some dazzling football in the latter stages of the first half. There was a collective sigh that went around Vicarage Road as Mike Dean whistled the first half to a close. The home fans realized that the 2-0 scoreline could have been much worse. They could have shipped 3,4 or even 5 goals if not for some good fortune and the heroics of Ben Foster.

The Hornets’ fans would have taken their seats at the restart with a real sense of foreboding. However, the next 45 minutes saw Watford dominate their more illustrious opponents and they would consider themselves unlucky to have not gotten even a point from this fixture.

Five weeks into the season, Manchester United are at the 8th position on the Premier Leaguetable and Watford after their first loss went down a spot to fourth on the table. So, here are the four main takeaways from the game.

#1. Marouane Fellaini is United"s backbone

Watford FC v Manchester United - Premier League
Fellaini could just be the missing piece of the puzzle for United

The big Belgian turned in another sterling display at both ends of the field. He was a rock in front of the United centre-backs, helping them keep the crosses and the aerial balls out. He also helped nullify the physical presence of Troy Deeney, which is no mean feat in itself.

In the final third, he was often the target for crosses from the wings and set-pieces and even notched up an assist against his name.

#2. The resurgence of Chris Smalling

Watford FC v Manchester United - Premier League
Chris Smalling scored the decider against Watford

The United veteran rolled back the years, making crucial tackles and interceptions. He, Lindelof and Fellaini seem to be forming a good understanding and were rock solid in the heart of United’s defence.

Smalling also got the decisive second goal from a corner, which is how he scores most of his goals. However, this time it was not a header. The chest control and spinning volley would have made any striker proud. His new hairstyle seems to be a lucky charm, and things have been only getting better for the centre-back since he started sporting it.

#3. United counter-attacks showing a glimpse of past greatness

Watford FC v Manchester United - Premier League
Pogba linked up well with Lingard and Sanchez to make good attacking moves

For the third game in a row, the United four front men (Pogba included) inter-linked brilliantly, moving the ball around quickly to devastating effect. They have obviously worked a lot in practice on interchanging positions, with Lukaku sometimes pushing wider to allow space for Lingard or Sanchez to come through the middle. Sanchez’s crosses are also finding Lukaku more frequently, and the Pogba swagger is starting to appear in a United shirt as well.

However, a worrying aspect for Mourinho is the lack of quality finishing. Lukaku, who is undeniably working hard for his team, is just not being clinical enough. Sanchez, Lingard, and Pobga have all also passed up glorious chances in the last few matches.

#4. Watford can be a force this year

Watford FC v Manchester United - Premier League
Javi Gracia has a good team playing under him

Javi Gracia seems to have found a perfect combination in his midfield. They have combined well with the strikers, resulting in some very attractive football.

Roberto Pereyra, especially, seems to have found a different gear to his game. Troy Deeney is back to his best, physically dominating defences and creating spaces for others to come charging into. Ben Foster was also a very astute buy on the part of Gracia and is coming up with some game-defining saves.

It will be interesting to see how far this seemingly well-oiled machine that is Watford goes in this year"s Premier League.

Breaking News: Fans react as Ronaldo finally ends his goal drought in the Serie A

Breaking News: Fans react as Ronaldo finally ends his goal drought in the Serie A

Cristiano Ronaldo"s famous £99 million move from Real Madrid to Juventus did not initially go down well as the Portuguese ace was unable to add a goal to his tally as a Bianconeri player.

The five-time Ballon d"Or winner faced a bit of a goal drought in his first three games- against Chievo, Lazio and Parma - in the Serie A.

The 320-minute wait has now come to an end as Ronaldo scored his first Juventus goal by netting against Sassuolo.

The Portuguese marksman saw an opportunity in the 50th minute when a corner ball rebounded to him off the post and saw him hit home for his new side.

After a mere 10 minutes, Ronaldo scored his second goal for the Italian giants. While the opener was arguably his easiest goal, the second goal was the goal to talk about.

Juventus found momentum on the counter when Ronaldo’s notable pace took him to the edge of the box. He then tapped low at the bottom corner to seal his second Serie A goal and the win for the side.

There were recent reports that the Juventus staff were putting Ronaldo on a different fitness regime in order to regain his goal-scoring form at the Old Lady.

Italian newspaper Tuttosport explained the situation as, "Cristiano Ronaldo has taken this type of programming a step further, because during the seasons he has studied together with the experts of Real Madrid the evolution of his body and therefore has adapted his way of working."

"Over the years, Ronaldo learned to control himself: he did not have all the energy when he first signed.

"He considered that being ready from the beginning of the season could be counterproductive and even risky because of the probability of fatigue, if not injury, would increase during the decisive phase of spring.

"That is why in recent years he has slightly modified his plans."

Breaking News: Fantasy Premier League - Top 3 scoring players from Gameweek 5

Breaking News: Fantasy Premier League - Top 3 scoring players from Gameweek 5

What a weekend of Premier League football it was! A weekend full of hits and misses for most of the Fantasy managers. A clinical performance from Chelsea against Cardiff saw them go right on top of the table to share joint-top honours with Liverpool who got the better of Spurs in the opening game of the Premier League weekend.

Five-wins from five games is what it looks like for The Blues and The Reds. Elsewhere, West Ham tasted their first victory in a commendable performance against a not so great Everton side. The Hammers jump over to the 16th spot from being bottom for a good four weeks previously.

The biggest upset of the fantasy weekend was Mendy not being included in the Manchester City squad, much to the disappointment of over 2,600,000 owners who"d transferred him in for Gameweek 5 expecting a lot of returns. But unfortunately, it was just not to be.

Nevertheless, let"s take a look at the players who managed to outshine in their respective roles on Matchday 5.

#Eden Hazard

Yes, that"s right. It was none other than Captain Fantastic, Eden Hazard who happened to score a hat-trick as Chelsea maintained their winning start to the season with a 4-1 victory over Cardiff City. Chelsea had to come from behind after the visitors went ahead in the 16th minute when Sol Bamba finished off a headed pass from Sean Morrison.

The Blues levelled in the last quarter of the first half following a brilliant passing move which led to Hazard finishing from the right corner of the 16-yard box. The Belgian struck again before half-time when he secured on to another Giroud pass. He went on to complete his treble with an 80th-minute kick from the penalty spot to seal a thumping victory for Chelsea. He fetched a staggering 20 points for his fantasy owners.

#Ryan Fraser

Bournemouth"s Ryan Fraser

It was AFC Bournemouth"s pocket rocket who stole the show at the Vitality Stadium. Yes, Ryan Fraser"s brace helped Bournemouth blast past a 10 man Leicester as Wes Morgan’s red card summed up the Foxes weekend. The Scotsman picked up 18 points with 2 goals and an assist to his name.

#Andriy Yarmalenko

Andriy Yarmalenko scored a double on his debut

West Ham wanted a win badly and in came Andriy Yarmalenko with all the answers and scored a double against a mediocre Everton side. The Ukrainian was handed his full-Premier-League-match debut after arriving at the Club in the summer.

His teamwork with the Austrian Marko Arnautovic was a treat to watch. Manuel Pellegrini can surely afford to breathe a tad easier after the Hammers played to their potential in a convincing display at the London Stadium. Yarmalenko earned an unprecedented 13 points to the delight of his fantasy owners.

Breaking News: Hazard inspires Chelsea recovery, shows what team could miss

Breaking News: Hazard inspires Chelsea recovery, shows what team could miss

Chelsea should be savoring Eden Hazard"s talents while he is still with the team.

As the winger"s contract winds down, his future at Stamford Bridge appears more uncertain. Even as manager Maurizio Sarri talks up the contribution of a player, in his prime at 27, who has shown no public indication that he will commit to Chelsea beyond 2020.

"When I arrived I thought that Hazard was one of the best players in Europe," Sarri said. "Now I have changed my mind. Maybe he is the best. But I also think he can still improve more."

Despite his pace, flair and artistry on the ball, the Belgium international just doesn"t score enough.

Sarri lauded Hazard"s importance to the team after tearing apart Cardiff with three goals in a 4-1 victory on Saturday that made it five wins from five matches. But it was only Hazard"s second hat trick in six years at Chelsea.

Sarri has publicly mused in his first two months in charge how Hazard should be aiming to reach the feats of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who are accustomed to scoring buckets of goals every year.

"I told him he can score 40 goals," Sarri said. "He has to improve some things, but he can do it."

Occasionally deployed as "false 9" or dropping too deep to be effective in front of goal, Hazard was on the left of a front three on Saturday alongside Pedro Rodriguez and Olivier Giroud, who didn"t score once in France"s run to the World Cup title and is scoreless in four Premier League games so far this season.

Hazard is already up to six goals in five games, a third of the way to matching his best tally at Chelsea in the 2016-17 season.

Hazard might not have European competitions to bulk up his haul, however. The slump from champions to fifth place last season means Chelsea dropped into the Europa League.

Although there are more games than the Champions League to reach the final, there is also an often draining turnaround of playing on Thursday nights and then resuming Premier League action on Sunday. Sarri said he is contemplating resting Hazard for the trip to Thessaloniki, where Chelsea opens its Europa League campaign against Greek club PAOK.

BURNLEY BLUES

The Europa League has already proved costly for Burnley, which had to start its season in July when the rest of the Premier League was still involved in friendlies. The northwest club had to go through three qualifying rounds in an attempt to reach the group stage but fell short.

The early exertion is taking its toll, with last season"s seventh-place finishers in last place in the Premier League with a one point from five games. The last time Burnley lost four consecutive Premier League games it was relegated in 2015.

"The biggest thing of all is to free the focus of the players," Burnley manager Sean Dyche said after Sunday"s 1-0 loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers. "When the players are playing with confidence everything flows a bit easier but to bring that flow back you have to be strong physically and mentally. We aren"t far off."

KANE"S STRUGGLES

When Tottenham plays Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, Harry Kane will have a point to prove.

With only two goals in five Premier League games so far, the striker"s fitness and form is under the microscope.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said it would be "crazy" to contemplate dropping Kane.

"He"s one of the best strikers in the world," Pochettino said. "I don"t care that he wasn"t great (in Saturday"s 2-1 loss to Liverpool). He"s going to score goals and he"s going to perform in the way we want and we expect. No problem."

Although the England captain was the Golden Boot winner at the World Cup, three of the six goals came from penalties and another was a deflection. Signs of lethargy were already setting in during the tournament in Russia, with Kane failing to score in England"s last three games as it finished fourth.

SHAW RETURNS

Manchester United had to cope without Luke Shaw in Saturday"s win at Watford after the left back had a concussion while playing for England. But Shaw will return, and replace Ashley Young, in the starting lineup when United plays Young Boys in Switzerland in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Breaking News: Eden Hazard can emulate Mohamed Salah"s Golden season, believes Maurizio Sarri

Breaking News: Eden Hazard can emulate Mohamed Salah"s Golden season, believes Maurizio Sarri

Chelsea"s Eden Hazard scored a hat-trick at the weekend, in a 4-1 win over newly promoted Cardiff. It was his fifth goal in as many games so far this season, and his manager Maurizio Sarri believes he can keep up this impressive form and score as many as 40 goals this season. To examine this claim let"s consider another tricky winger who managed that goal-scoring feat last year.

Mo Salah had a glittering season last time around, netting 44 goals in all competitions. Hazard has never scored more than 20 (apart from 7 years ago when he played for Lille in the French league), but neither had Salah. The Egyptian"s uptake in fortunes can be put down to a perfect storm - he had moved to a new league, with a new team and new manager who were all suited to his talents and, later, built specifically to profit him.

Jurgen Klopp"s Liverpool were undoubtedly the ideal team for him to sign for. He hasn"t hit the heights of last year yet this season, but he has still shown immense flashes of the skill and trickery which won him the Premier League Golden Boot.

Likewise, in Sarri and the style of play he orchestrates, Hazard has finally been given a winning combination. Previous managers like Antonio Conte and especially Jose Mourinho stifled the Belgian at times, forcing him to track back when he didn"t want to and demanding defensive tactics that didn"t allow him to show off his full set of talents.

Anyone who watched Sarri"s Napoli side over the past few years could have told you that Hazard would have fit in perfectly. Rapid, attacking football was the order of the day as the Partenopei came oh so close to dethroning the perennial champions of Serie A, Juventus.

Since Roberto Martinez, who some would say is perhaps too attacking, has been manager of the Belgian national side, Hazard has netted 13 times in 21 appearances, a huge improvement on his goals-per-game under previous managers. If he can display - and maintain - a similar boost to his returns for an attack-minded Chelsea then maybe Sarri"s prediction will come true.

Breaking News: What Has Maurizio Sarri Changed From Antonio Conte’s Day In Terms Of Tactics?

Breaking News: What Has Maurizio Sarri Changed From Antonio Conte’s Day In Terms Of Tactics?

Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea started this Premier League campaign in a better manner than expected, amassing three consecutive wins out from the first three game of the season. To achieve these results, Sarri drastically changed Chelsea’s attitude and tactical philosophy from the previous regime. So, to better understand what this methodical Italian manager did, we will take a deep analysis looking at what Sarri changed from Antonio Conte’s day in terms of tactical analysis, statistics and not just.

First and foremost, from a tactical point of view, Sarri changed Chelsea’s tactical approach. Veritably, whilst – under Conte – the Blues was set to play in a deep defensive block, ready to play quick counter-attacks when in possession, with Sarri at the helm they became a more possession-oriented team. Conte was a defensive-minded coach that put emphasis on playing without the ball. His three-man backline often became a five-man defence while his attacking wingers was trained to collapse behind to build a four-man block in the middle of the park. It means Conte’s 3-4-3 attacking system resulted to be a defensive 5-4-1 formation most of the playing time.

Sarri’s Tactical Approach

The astonishing 64.7% per cent of ball possession and 89.4% in terms of pass accuracy that Sarri’s Chelsea produced so far are higher numbers than the ones the Blues posted last term under Conte. On the other side, this season Chelsea have shown some vulnerability when it comes to opposite’s the counter-attacks that is unprecedented under Conte.

This is a tactical point where Sarri needs to work: his Napoli side was more brilliant in terms of facing opposite’s counter-attacks. Sarri-ball at Napoli featured a better counter-pressing with the first goal to regain ball possession in more advanced zones of the field. When regaining the ball wasn’t possible, Napoli’s counter-pressing action still was able to force the opponents to play the ball into less dangerous areas through a smart defensive positioning.

In the first three Premier League games, this counter-pressing didn’t work so well and Sarri can legitimately be a bit concerned about it. However, this term is still young, so the Italian manager has time at his disposal to fix this thing.

Another key tactical aspect where Sarri’s Chelsea differs from Conte’s version is the height of the backline. In fact, as it has been remarked, Chelsea’s defensive line under Sarri is playing higher than it was under Conte. The main goal over there is to restrict the field for the opponents, lowering their opportunities to play in counter and increasing Chelsea’s chances to press higher up the field.

With Chelsea playing so high, the whole construction phase has been moved high up so you can see Jorginho, Chelsea’s playmaker, often touching the ball in the middle of the park. It provides Chelsea with a defensive edge too. In fact, should the Blues be dispossessed during their high build-up, the opposition’s side still have a lot of ground to run through in order to reach Kepa’s goal. It provides Sarri’s team more time to collapse behind trying to recover on the ball carrier. That said, Sarri’s defensive mindset is orientated to defend pushing up forwards when the ball is lost. The whole possession is played at a higher speed than the team did under the previous regime.

Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea tactical analysis and statistics

It is also obvious that playing so high in the opposite half allows Chelsea to have more players ready to be involved in the offensive phase. It means that a lot of Blues’ footballers can make their contribution in terms of goals and assists or providing the needed linking play to build a strong team’s offensive structure.

Those who benefited from Sarri’s tactics

It has benefited players usually suited to play deeper, notably left-back Marcos Alonso. Under Sarri, the Spaniard quickly became an offensive threat.

Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea tactical analysis and statistics

Another player that enjoyed this more offensive-orientated Chelsea has been N’Golo Kante. Previously known as a holding midfielder, excellent providing a shield in front of the backline, the world champion Frenchman has been discovered to be a good box-to-box midfielder, also dangerous when in possession.

Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea tactical analysis and statistics

But Sarri’s innovation has been not limited to the offensive side of the ball as the 59-year old manager changed his team’s defensive philosophy too. In fact, while Chelsea’s defenders were suited to defending by looking at the forwards’ positioning, Sarri installed a pure zonal-marking defensive system in which Blues’ backline has to care about ball positioning.

In other words, Chelsea’s four-man backline is defending depending on where the ball is and not looking at the opponents. So, Sarri’s defenders are trained to control pivotal zones, playing as a unit, maintaining shape and distances between the players forming the defensive line. Sarri favours team’s compactness. That didn’t occur under Conte where the four-man forming the backline was suited to play as individuals, reacting to opposition’s movements in a kind of man-marking oriented defensive system.

Off-field changes

Furthermore, Sarri’s changes have been extended to the locker room. The new manager weakened the strict diet rules Chelsea’s players experimented under Conte. Sarri provided his footballers with a larger choice of food in the training centre and in hotels feeling that his players are professional enough to be able to take care of their body by themselves. Sarri thought he doesn’t need to be babysitting them in the way Conte was used to do. The former Napoli manager also allowed his players to stay at home and join the team on matchdays when playing at Stamford Bridge, while they were forced to spend the night before the game altogether at the team hotel under Conte.

These changes are not on-field tactical adjustments, but they still are ‘tactical’ improvements if you consider that tactics is every strategy planned to achieve a specific goal. Building a most enjoyable and fresh environment is a key component to look at in order to install new tactical ideas and improve players.

Conclusion

At this moment, Sarri already changed the way Chelsea are playing. It was a bit risky as the Blues won a Premier League and an FA Cup under Conte, so can’t say his methods were not working at Cobham. Surely, neither players nor pundits enjoyed the way team was playing under Sarri’s predecessor. Conte’s relationship with the locker room had faded so a change was needed. The Sarri-ball project still is at an early stage, but the path was mapped out. We don’t know where it will finish but appears obvious that Sarri is looking at the big picture and has clear in his own mind where he is going.

Breaking News: Chelsea 4-1 Cardiff - Top of the League and Eden Hazard"s having a laugh!

Breaking News: Chelsea 4-1 Cardiff - Top of the League and Eden Hazard"s having a laugh!
Us: Sh*t starts to get real now, with a mass of fixtures on the horizon. Pedro Pony (apparently, in the mind of a five year old girl, the greatest compliment you can pay anyone is to say there are as awesome as a pony, and little Mia bestowed this honour on him at the Bournemouth game) got the nod over Willian for today, as did The Beard over Morata. This looked like a slap in the face, but for reasons that will become apparent turned out to be a good call. Kovacic started alongside Kante, and other than that it was as you would expect.

Them: I recognised Harry Arter. I’d heard of Junior Hoilett but if you gave me a grand I couldn’t point him out.

So obviously anything other than a crushing victory would be a bit embarrassing and having said that, being Chelsea, we would find a way to make a massive drama out of it. They were very excited after three minutes to get a corner. In fact at this point the away supporters were excited by everything. The Beard almost manufactured a chance on the break but it didn’t quite come off. He got his head on another a couple of minutes later, but couldn’t quite direct it. On 8 minutes George Michael pulled one back for him again, he but failed to get any control on it. He was looking extremely spritely despite being weighed down by all that facial hair.

It wasn’t all us though, they weren’t setting the world on fire, but they were at least giving it a go. They could have gone ahead at least once in the opening minutes. Don’t take any credit away from them for their endeavour at this stage, but don’t underestimate already the contribution of their man of the match either. Jonathan Moss. I’m just going to slate him throughout so let’s just name and shame him straight off. Slightly thinner this season, but no less sh*t at his job. A hugely fortunate goal for them after a quarter of an hour. Considering that Sol F*cking Bamba has the touch of a wrecking ball operated by Gazza after he’s been out on a binge. Poor Kepa was left rooted to the spot. But more terrifying than this lapse and surprise goal was the revelation when they ran over to the bench to celebrate, that Neil Warnock was wearing SHORTS. Some things you can never unsee.

Oh well, well over an hour to atone for this nonsense and within two minutes we had almost equalised twice. At least it had served to give us a kick up the a*se and it had woken the crowd up. We do love a bit of siege mentality at The Bridge. We’d have to actually get the ball in play though. For the away support were hiding it. And when it did emerge, the time-wasting that had been instantly implemented meant that most of the action revolved around some bloke in neon orange making a ridiculous faff of putting the ball down in his box and kicking it. Moss was joyfully awarding them free kicks every time they fell over, I had counted half a dozen from them that Mss had blissfully overlooked to the extent that half the shed was contemplating a pitch invasion to cock-punch him. He was even stopping play for fake leg injuries. They wouldn’t even give the ball back along sporting lines either after pretending to be injured. Either Harry Arter is a monumental f*ckmuppet or a cheating turd.

Well that deteriorated quickly. Cardiff had defaulted back to sh*t on a stick football. With a loud chorus of “Sheep shagging b*stards, we know what we are.”  In the face of all this wankery we were persisting in looking for an equaliser. An attempt from The Beard went wide, another hit Kovacic on the back. On 23 Pedro Pony looked like he was going to bend it in but the ball carried on going wide, and three minutes later he almost put it on The Beard’s head but the ball drifted out onto the roof of the net. In the face of their adversity, Cardiff introduced a new ploy. If throwing yourself on the floor doesn’t get Moss’s attention, grab your face and scream until he stops play. Cunning.

But the chances were still accumulating and they had ceased to attempt to put up any kind of opposition. They were rightly punished for their cynicism by Eden, thanks to The Beard, was left in a position to run at a load of donkeys like the little genius that he is and slot in an equaliser. Hurrah. Back on track. Well Llion will be relieved because now he’s a shade further away from having to travel back to Cardiff with them gloating in his face. They were much deflated now. Harry Arter, who had swiftly become the most hated man in West London, had given up and sat down on the pitch with a sad puppy dog face. Things got worse for him and his leek munching chums shortly before half time when once again The Beard set Hazard up to score. My favourite bit of it? His detour to celebrate in front of them profusely. Lovable, cheeky little f*cker. We had turned it around and they were complaining about how long it was taking Kepa to kick the ball. Boom. Last play of the half? Kante half leaping for a header on goal with an absolutely petrified look on his face about what he was going to do when it arrived. Bless.

Here’s one for half time. Next time you read about big bad racist Chelsea in the press, and how mean and bigoted we all are, and how we laugh at the holocaust and minorities (like me) cower at the thought of showing our face, note that for the first time today I saw a girl wearing the hijab at a football match. In fetching blue I might add, as she chatted in the Shed End with strangers, appeared to have a great time and quite rightly no one gave a flying f*ck about her veil. You’ll never read about that in the papers.

Arter was not enjoying his day so much. He had had enough of being the pantomime villain and f*cked off before the restart. Unfortunately Jonathon Moss didn’t follow his example. It was a low key beginning. Kovacic was not at all comfortable and went off for Barkley within five minutes. For a big lolloping bellend Bamba was a thorn in our side. It’s the Fellaini effect. It’s not that he’s actually a good defender. It’s the fact that nobody wants to get too close to him less one of his massive, flailing inspector gadget limbs end your career. Thanks largely to his unconscious endeavours, there had been no real chances to speak of by the hour mark. Please Chelsea, get another goal before these hapless twats bang in an equaliser off of someone’s nutsack.

Pedro Pony was doing his best - another shot saved on 61, a minute later he was involved in sending the ball across the face of goal. But they had one effort scoot past the post too and Sarri changed it up with 25 minutes to go. On came Willian for PP. Cardiff, in the meantime, had descended into farce. One of them attempted to fly through the air and mount Luiz, fell on the floor and then moaned about wanting a free kick. “I hope you broke your collar bone you c*nt!” was one response from behind us.

They’d bought on some substitutes - Jizz Richards, Gary Madine, some other bloke I’ve never heard of. None of them made them look any less hapless. A motley element of their crew was kicking off by this point. Though it has to be said that the Cardiff fans made a bigger donation to our charity boxes outside than any away contingent I can remember. The Goons literally gave us £1.50. But their mood was not improved by a completely moronic foul on Willian in the box. Never in doubt who was going to take it, and finally on 80 minutes we went two goals clear and Eden claimed the match ball by making the penalty look easy.

Cue chants of Engerlund, Engerlund, Engerlund, 1-0 and You F*cked It Up, You’re Going Down With the Pikeys, and You’ve Had Your Day Out, Now F*ck Off Home. Oh. And a huge sigh of relief from Llion, who was about to do so in the same direction. Willian sealed it with one of his specials and then we were into running the clock down territory. They wanted a penalty when Paterson - which one of our number insists is spelt F-U-C-K-W-I-T tripped over Luiz lying prone on the floor and started crying about a penalty, and Kepa did have to palm one away, but the game was done. After a short intervention during which Moss had a lengthy chat with Warnock, presumably insisting he put those knees away, the points were ours.

So: Top of the league. Though I won’t go rushing to any newspapers because they will not tell you anything about us confounding expectations this season, they will all be beating another one out over the red Scouse. Yawn. Eden was given license to roam again, and ran the show. I don’t see Morata being left out as a particular slight on him today, I see using The Beard instead as a tactically astute decision when you look at their defence. He’s the better man at wrestling for the ball against meatheads, winning it in the air and chipping in in defence. It was a Drogbaesque performance from him today. Individually some great moments from the likes of Rudi, but our defence looks fragile. I don’t doubt that we can score against the likes of Klippity Klopp and his Nivea muppets or St. Pep’s angels, but if we can concede to Cardiff at home, we undoubtedly will against them. Possibly heavily. We’ve done all that could have been asked of us so far, but this is where we really get tested, with the onset of two more competitions and tougher fixtures.

Breaking News: German Chancellor Angela Merkel visits Algeria to discuss migration, terror

Breaking News: German Chancellor Angela Merkel visits Algeria to discuss migration, terror

German Chancellor Angela Merkel travelled to Algeria on Monday to discuss migration issues and how to combat terror.

Another aim of the talks with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in Algiers is to boost Algeria’s role as a stabilising factor in North Africa, Merkel’s office indicated.

The chancellor is also meeting Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia during the one-day trip.

Merkel was also expected to address the long-standing conflict between Algeria and its western neighbour Morocco.

A planned visit in February 2017 was cancelled at the last minute as a result of Bouteflika’s health.

The president is 81 years old and has been in office since 1999.

Algeria is a major transit route for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

The German government is under domestic pressure to cut migration.

One of the aims of Merkel’s trip is to facilitate the deportation of Algerian nationals whose applications for political asylum have been denied by Germany.

Germany’s grand coalition plans to characterise Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco as “safe countries of origin,’’ thus, easing the repatriation process for the German authorities.

While in Algeria, Merkel is to visit a girls’ high school initiated in 2008 by the German Foreign Office as part of its “Partners for the Future” programme.

She will also hold discussions with representatives of civil society.

Breaking News: China’s pig fever outbreak a boon for chicken farmers

Breaking News: China’s pig fever outbreak a boon for chicken farmers

An outbreak of African swine fever in China is proving to be a windfall for chicken farmers, helping drive up prices of the country’s second-most popular meat to two-and-a-half year highs.

With pork in short supply, as authourities try to contain the highly contagious disease, shoppers are turning to chicken as a substitute, with some diners also concerned about safety.

The turnaround is a boon for farmers in the world’s top poultry producer after tepid demand growth in recent years following a series of food safety and bird flu scares.

Broiler prices in top producing region Shandong JCI-BRO-JINN hit 9.7 yuan (1.41 dollars) per kilogram earlier this month, their highest since March 2016.

“The recent African swine fever outbreaks have pushed up buying of chicken from cafeteria and restaurants to some extent.

”More people might choose chicken now, especially in the infected regions with African swine fever cases,” said Li Jinghui, managing director of the China Poultry Association.

Swine flu cannot be cured and is often fatal for pigs.

After more than a dozen outbreaks since the country’s first case was reported in early August, Beijing has slaughtered around 40,000 hogs and banned transport of live hogs from and through infected areas.

The moves have tightened supply in the populous south, leading to soaring prices just as demand rises ahead of a week-long holiday in October.

Chicken is a cheaper substitute for pork and prices typically rise when pork prices increase.

Some cuts like chicken breast bones, used in school and work canteens, are already at record highs, according to Pan Chenjun, senior analyst at Rabobank.

Anecdotal reports suggested some consumers are also worried about catching swine fever from infected pork, even though the disease cannot be passed to humans.

“Although there is no official notice about the [swine flu] epidemic, I feel that pork is unsafe,” a student in southern Guangzhou city surnamed Zhuang told the Media.

“Now, I choose chicken dishes when I am out for a meal.”

Share prices jumped in August at companies including poultry producers Fujian Sunner Development Co. Ltd and Shandong Xiantan.

Stock prices and broiler prices have eased somewhat this month as more chickens were sent to slaughterhouses ahead of the holiday period, said Alice Xuan, an analyst with Shanghai JC Intelligence Co. Ltd.

This comes despite a shortage of breeding stock that has already helped support chicken prices this year, analysts and industry participants said.

Beijing’s anti-dumping tariffs on imports of chicken meat from Brazil, implemented in June, have also underpinned chicken prices in China.

Average prices for chicken meat product reached 11.15 yuan per kg in early September, up 13.2 per cent on the year, according to Boyar, an agribusiness consultancy.

Breaking News: Theresa May: My Brexit plan or crash out of EU

Breaking News: Theresa May: My Brexit plan or crash out of EU

British Prime Minister Theresa May has warned that her Brexit plan is the only alternative to crashing out of the European Union without agreement, in an interview broadcast Monday.

Despite strong opposition in her Conservative party and criticism in Brussels, May has stuck by the so-called Chequers proposal to keep close trade ties with the EU after Brexit on March 29 next year.

“The alternative to that will be not having a deal,” she told the BBC.

May will meet EU leaders in Salzburg on Wednesday and Thursday, as she seeks a breakthrough in talks on the Brexit divorce and the future UK-EU trading relationship.

Even if she gets a deal in the coming weeks, it must be agreed by the House of Commons in London, where she has only a small majority.

A senior figure in the main opposition Labour party has said it was likely to vote against the deal, meaning only a small number of May’s Conservative MPs need rebel to kill it.

May expressed confidence parliament would approve the deal — but warned there was no alternative if Britain wanted to avoid a potentially disruptive “no deal” scenario.

“Do we really think… that if parliament was to say, ‘No, go back and get a better one’, do we really think the EU is going to give a better deal at that point?” she said.

May has proposed that Britain follow EU rules in trade in goods after Brexit, to protect manufacturing supply lines and avoid a “hard border” between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

“I don’t want manufacturers to feel that they’ve got to operate under all sorts of different rules, because that complicates life for them and that potentially means business leaving this country,” she said.

May also insisted no other plan on the table would ensure “frictionless” trade in Ireland.

But critics say her proposal would tie Britain too closely to the EU, and argue that the Irish issue can be resolved through trusted trader schemes and the use of technology.

Former foreign minister Boris Johnson, who quit in July in protest at the Chequers plan, launched a fresh attack on it in his weekly newspaper column on Monday.

“The whole thing is a constitutional abomination,” Johnson, who has previously compared the plan to a “suicide vest”, wrote in the Daily Telegraph.

Breaking News: RIFAN - Food security likely to be affected as flood submerges rice, maize farms in Adamawa

Breaking News: RIFAN - Food security likely to be affected as flood submerges rice, maize farms in Adamawa

The Adamawa Chapter of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria has said that with over 5,000 of its members affected by the flood, food security in the state is under threat.

The chapter’s Chairman, made the assertion in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Yola.

Maduwa said that the organisation, which has 7, 000 registered members in the state, was, however, yet to ascertain the extent of damages caused by the flood.

According to him, the earlier predicted bumper harvest is now being threatened by flooding.

“Reports reaching us from our various local government area offices, especially those along the bank of River Benue, revealed that flood had submerged some farmlands.

“We received reports from 18 out of 21 local government areas, excluding Jada, Ganye and Toungo,” he said.

He complained that majority of the farmers obtained bank loans for the rainfall farming and appealed to the government to look into the matter.

Similarly, the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, has said that it had begun compilation of accurate data of the affected communities in the state.

Dr Muhammed Suleiman, the Executive Secretary of the agency confirmed the development to NAN in Yola.

Suleiman also confirmed that thousands of farmers were affected by the flood across the state.

“Currently, we are compiling the number of affected persons. And available records show that the flood had submerged thousands of hectares of maize and rice farmlands,” Suleiman said.

He said that state government had reached out to some affected communities in Numan Local Government Area.

Breaking News: Man sues DSS for N5 billion for unlawful detention, incapacitation

One Salihu Enesi, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2015 without arraignment has sued the agency demanding N5 billion for aggravated damages for unlawful detention and incapacitation.

Enesi, filed the suit marked No. FHC/ABJ/05/974/18 through his counsel, Bala Dakum of Dakum & Co at the Federal High Court, Abuja, Division, last Wednesday. He is also asking for an unconditional release from DSS custody.

Besides, the applicant, who is now incapacitated following injuries from the shootings he suffered, has asked the court for a declaration that the arrest and continued detention since the 28th October 2015 by the Respondent, its privies, agents officers or representatives is illegal, unlawful null and void and amounts to gross violation of his fundamental rights as enshrined in sections 34, 35 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

A declaration that the shooting of the Applicant on the leg by the Respondent agents on the 28th October, 2015 which incapacitated the Applicant and failure of the Respondent to treat the applicant for the period of over two years while he remains in its custody amounts to cruel torture, degrading and inhuman treatment contrary to Sections 34, 35, and 36 of the 1999 Constitution.

An order of the Honourable Court directing the Respondent to immediately release the applicant on bail unconditionally.

An order of the Honourable Court directing the Respondent to pay the Applicant the sum of N5 billion for unlawful detention and causing permanent disability. An apology from the agency.

The Applicant is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondent from arresting him based on facts to the application.

According to a 19-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Raji Jamiu in support of the application, Enesi was shot by the operatives of SSS on his leg on 28 October 2015 .

The DSS operatives them carried him into their vehicle with his wife and two children, age four months and three years on 28th October 2015 from his family house in Tung Makama Taxa Local Government, Niger State.

The agency later released the wife and the two minors after four months in custody but all efforts to get Enesi release from custody has been futile.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the matter.

Breaking News: Ex-militants protest, demand removal of Amnesty chief

Breaking News: Ex-militants protest, demand removal of Amnesty chief

Ex-militants in Bayelsa State have taken to the streets to protest thereby calling for the removal of Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Charles Dokubo.

The protesting militants on Monday morning blocked the Mbiama axis of the East/West road, causing a gridlock that lasted for about two hours.

According to them, creating the blockade is to send a message to the Federal Government that they are not ready to accept ‘no’ for an answer.

They are also complained about the non-payment of their monthly stipend by the Federal Government, thereby issuing a 7-day ultimatum

The protesters say they won’t remove it until they receive a phone call from the amnesty office agreeing to pay them their outstanding allowance owed them.

President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Charles Dokubo on March 13, 2018, after sacking the former Brigadier-General Paul Boroh (Retd).

The President directed the National Security Adviser (NSA) to carry out a full investigation into the activities of the Amnesty Programme from 2015 to date, especially allegations of financial impropriety and other acts that are allegedly detrimental to the objectives of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

Breaking News: NLC urges MTN to pay $10 billion illegal repatriation, tax arrears

Breaking News: NLC urges MTN to pay $10 billion illegal repatriation, tax arrears

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged communication giant, the MTN Nigeria to comply with the directive of the Federal Government to pay the over $10 billion as tax arrears and illegal repatriation.

Mr Ayuba Wabba, NLC president, made the call in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Specifically, he said the NLC will advice MTN to comply, without further delay, the directive of the Federal Government to pay $2 billion in tax arrears.

“This is as well as the $8.13 billion illegally repatriated to South Africa over which four indigenous banks have been fined.

”We similarly urge the Federal Government to spare no effort in recovering this money as anything to the contrary will send wrong signals to other corporate organisations it had punished for lesser tax infractions.

”The need to enforce this order is all the more compelling when it is realised that workers pay taxes they can ill-afford, but religiously pay all the same,” he said.

Wabba noted that government’s tax reforms have been skewed in favour of corporate organisations, there was no reason for a default.

He added that every taxable person is expected to pay his or her tax as and when due.

Wabba said: ”If companies default, with what is government expected to run the country or conduct its business?

”In our view, this incident does not only directly test the Thabo Mbeki Report on Illicit Financial Flows from Africa, it is also a major crime against the government and people of Nigeria.

”On our part, we are, however, not surprised by the unethical conduct of MTN.

”They are not only engaged in the exploitation of Nigerian workers and turning them into slaves, but have extended their frontiers to unwholesome economic exploitation and sabotage.

”The questions on every lips are: How many times has MTN done this? How many other companies are doing this?”

He stated that through the Tax Justice Campaign, labour had relentlessly and assiduously drew the attention of the government and Nigerians to the humongous crime against the vulnerable people of Africa, especially Nigeria.

He noted that over 70 million people in Africa are said to be the poorest in the world.

”Government should use this opportunity to send an appropriate message to everyone, especially corporate organisations who often pay taxes in the breach.

”Coupled with this, government’s tax reforms will only make meaning if they are judiciously executed.

”We feel vindicated by the latest discovery, while offering an explanation for picketing MTN offices across the country in July this year, we highlighted labour laws, local content law and security breaches by MTN.

”We exposed other acts of impunity by MTN, in spite of the fact that 60 per cent of its global income comes from Nigeria,” he said.

He urged critical government agencies to closely look into the operations of the company, especially in light of the Thabo Mbeki Report.

Breaking News: Governor Ahmed - Information critical to national development

Breaking News: Governor Ahmed - Information critical to national development

The Kwara State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, has described information dissemination as critical to national development and integration.

Ahmed made this remark when the national body of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Ilorin.

He called for changes in the way we do things in order to key into current world’s technological driven environment.

Ahmed explained the need to shun hate speeches, communicate developmental news and bring rural communities more to limelight.

“The current attitude where we concentrate more on urban developments and activities does not encourage even growth and progress of the country,” Ahmed said.

The Governor commended RATTAWU on its just concluded activities in Kwara State, which he said was a step towards giving it a strong phase, with the aim of creating awareness for the existence of a platform that would not only be seen as fighting solely for the welfare of its members but to be part of a direction formulation to help government in driving its polices.

Earlier in his address, the National President of the Union, Dr. Kabir Garba Tsanni, said Governor Ahmed’s administration is labour friendly and on record as repositioning the socio-economic fortunes of the state, thereby improving the standard of living of the entire citizens .

Kabir, who disclosed that the union is the largest in terms of media and cultural workers, thanked Ahmed for his administration’s support for the union over the years.

Breaking News: CSNAC petitions EFCC, seeks probe of MTN, others over alleged illegal repatriation of revenue

Breaking News: CSNAC petitions EFCC, seeks probe of MTN, others over alleged illegal repatriation of revenue

The Civil Society Network Against Corruption, which is a coalition of over 150 anti-corruption organization with the aim of constructively combating corruption in Nigeria, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate the alleged illegal repatriation of export revenue by communication giant company, MTN, and its collaborators.

In a petition forwarded to the EFCC and signed by CSNAC’s Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, the Network said the anti-graft commission should cause an investigation into the matter with a view to enforcing the return of the funds illegally repatriated to the Federal Government of Nigeria as the Foreign Exchange Manual stipulates.

The petition reads: “Our network was pleased to read on the pages of newspapers the action of the Central Bank of Nigeria with sanctions imposed on the company (MTN) and banks allegedly for unlawful operations and violation of our financial system.

“The sanction, according to reports, was as a result of forensic analysis of all the available certificates of capital importation (CCIs) and foreign exchange documentations for remittances and (or) repatriation of dividends to offshore corporate shareholders of MTN Communication Nigeria Ltd, with a view to tracing and recovering illegal remittances.

“Some experts, financial analysts and lawyers have analysed a draft of the Investigation Report on the Alleged Depletion of Nigeria External Reserves by MTN, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Standard Chartered Bank in collaboration with CBN Officials and allegedly found, from their analysis, that the underlisted ten (10) individuals and corporate entities were implicated in the forgery and/or production of false CCIs to the Central Bank of Nigeria and the foreign exchange market contrary to Section 29 (1)(d) of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous) Provisions Act Cap. F34 LFN, 2004 and punishable under sections 29(2) (b), (4) and 31.

“These corporate entities are: Standard Chartered Nigeria Limited; Citibank Nigeria Limited; Stanbic-IBTC Ltd; MTN Communications Nigeria Limited.”

CSNAC gave further breakdown in the petition as follows: “The particulars of alleged 2 breaches by Standard Chartered Bank (SCBL), Citibank Nigeria Limited (CNL), and Stanbic IBTC Ltd (SIL) are as follows:

“Particulars of alleged SCBL’s Breach:

“SCBL issued and (or) reissued a total of 110 CCIs to MTN from 2001 to 2015. 79 CCIs out of the 110 CCIs, breached the above statutory provisions and were thus irregularly issued. SCBL used and (or) caused to be used 57 out of the 79 CCIs irregularly issued to MTN to remit a total of $10, 889, 534, 833 (USD) to MTN’s offshore corporate shareholders. Out of this total sum, SIL used 16 irregular CCIs to remit the sum of $936, 017, 236. 89 (USD) to eight (8) MTN offshore corporate shareholders.

“Diamond Bank Plc used 9 irregular CCIs to remit the total sum of $336, 426, 858. 26 to nine (9) MTN offshore corporate shareholders.

“SCBL indemnified SIL and Diamond Plc for losses and (or) liability that may arise from the use of these CCIs.

“SCBL conduct is contravention 6 contained in the Foreign Exchange Manual, namely that the foreign exchange in the sum of $10, 889, 534, 833.00 (USD) sold to and (or) sourced from the market by SCBL, SIL and Diamond Bank Plc and remitted to MTN’s offshore corporate shareholders, was used for non-eligible purposes.”

It also listed particulars of CNL’s breach as: “On 6 February 2008, CNL transferred seven (7) CCIs (Nos. 010357, 010358, 010081, 010079, 010218, 010203, and 010219) which it had issued to MTN shareholders, to SCBL. On the same date, Diamond Bank Plc transferred three (3) CCIs (Nos. 0205156, 0205154 and 0205155), which it had issued to MTN shareholders, to SCBL. SCBL cancelled and combined the ten (10) CCIs with 29 CCIs it had issued to MTN shareholders to realise a total of 39 CCIs. SCBL replaced the 39 CCIs with 20 new CCIs.

“However, 24 out of the SCBL’s 29 CCIs had been irregularly issued to nine (9) MTN shareholders which received 18 out of the 20 new CCIs. The 18 CCIs are therefore deemed to have been issued irregularly.

“In 17 transactions between 3 September 2009 and 26 May 2015, CNL repeatedly used three (3) of the 7 CCIs (Nos. 010358, 010081, 010079) which CNL bank had hitherto transferred to and cancelled by SCBL on 6 February 2008, and the replacement irregular CCIs No. 016171 (CM. No. 080025) to remit a total of $1, 766, 263, 212. 75 (USD) to MTN International Mauritius Limited.

“In nine (9) transactions between 5 December 2007 and 2 October 2008, CNL repeatedly used nine (9) of the above mentioned 18 irregularly issued CCIs (Nos. 016154, 016156, 016170, 016140, 016159, 016157, 016163, 016141 and 016171) to sell and transfer a total of $535, 000, 000. 00 (USD) to SCBL for purported remittance to MTN offshore corporate shareholders.

“CNL’s conduct is contravention 6 contained in the Foreign Exchange Manual, namely that the foreign exchange in the total sum of $2, 301, 263, 212. 75 (USD) sold to and (or) sourced from the money market by CNL for purposes of remittances to MTN’s offshore corporate shareholders, was used for non-eligible purposes.

“Particulars of SIL’s Breach:

“SIL under-reported the total number of CCIs issued to MTN. SIL reported 13 CCIs valued at $52, 887, 494 (USD). Documents obtained from SIL in the course of the investigation directed by the Office of the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minster of Justice showed that SIL issued a total of 225 CCIs for various amounts totaling $999, 560,000 (USD).

“SIL issued 35 CCIs out of the 225 CCIs to local MTN shareholders who remitted share purchase money in United States dollars sourced from Nigeria, to SIL’s Deutsche Bank account in New York. A CCI is issued for capital imported into Nigeria and not for capital sourced and exported from Nigeria. Accordingly, the 35 CCIs breached Section 15 of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1995 and Memoranda 20 (3) (vi) (d) and 22 of the Foreign Exchange Manual.

“SIL only sought 9 CBN approvals for a total of 185 CCIs issued to MTN for importation of equipment and machines because all the 185 CCIs were not issued within the 24 hours stipulated under Section 15 and Memorandum 22 above. Accordingly, the 9 approvals were granted in error and SIL irregularly issued the 185 CCIs.

“SIL issued 5 CCIs to MTN for equity inflows. The issuance of these CCIs did not also comply with Section 15 and Memorandum 22 for similar reason stated in the preceding paragraph. Accordingly, SIL irregularly issued the 5 CCIs to MTN.

“SIL’s foregoing conducts implicate submission of false returns and production of false CCIs with a view to utilizing these CCIs to remit foreign exchange to individuals and corporate entities outside Nigeria.

“We request, respectfully, that your Commission should cause an investigation into this matter with a view to enforcing the return of the funds illegally repatriated to the Federal Government of Nigeria as the Foreign Exchange Manual stipulates and prosecuting the persons and institutions accordingly under existing laws.”

Breaking News: Ex-Minister Maku urges federal government to investigate shoddy schools contracts in Nasarawa

Breaking News: Ex-Minister Maku urges federal government to investigate shoddy schools contracts in Nasarawa

The National Secretary of All Progressives Grand Alliance, Labaran Maku, has urged the Federal Government to investigate shoddy schools contracts in Nasarawa State.

Maku, who made the call on Sunday in Lafia, alleged that all the newly constructed primary and junior secondary schools built by Governor Umaru Al-Makura government were death traps.

Maku, a former Minister of information, urged the Federal Government, through the Universal Basic Education Commission, to conduct the investigation urgently, to avoid collapse that would lead to loss of lives.

He said: “Government must take urgent steps to safeguard the lives of teachers and pupils; the danger in the schools are apparent and must be avoided.”

Maku expressed regret that the structures, built less than four years ago, were already in a dilapidated state and blamed the situation on “substandard construction work”.

He said the storey buildings were constructed without pillars, thereby compromising the standards.

He advised government to prosecute the contractors who did the shoddy jobs to serve as a deterrent to other contractors with similar intentions of cheating the system.

Maku expressed shock that the jobs which were satisfied to be good, were already dilapidated.

He, therefore, urged the government to emulate advanced countries by being proactive, to avoid any disaster.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria had recently complained about the poor state of school buildings in the state.

Breaking News: Governor Ortom accuses Senator Akume of plot to destabilise Benue

Breaking News: Governor Ortom accuses Senator Akume of plot to destabilise Benue

The friction between the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, and Senator George Akume, has continued unabated as the governor has accused Akume of plotting to destabilise the state.

Ortom alleged in a press statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and ICT, Mr. Tahav Agerzua, that there were intelligence reports that Akume held a meeting in China where plans were perfected to make Benue State ungovernable.

“We also have intelligence reports that meetings were held recently in China where plans were perfected to make Benue State ungovernable.

“As a government we are also prepared to tackle all threats to peace within the ambit of the law. The so-called world press conference addressed by Senator Akume and his co-travellers to political retirement in Abuja yesterday, is yet another futile attempt to resurrect a diminished platform which has lost touch with the people,” the statement said.

The statement added that since Governor Ortom and other patriots in Benue State took the wise decision to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Akume and his small band have found it difficult to recover from this political uppercut which left their floundering and sinking party in total confusion.

“They have consequently resorted to Ortom bashing as a favorite pastime and lamentation as if that will bring their discredited party back to life,” the party added.

“We understand that the mass movement of Benue’s most potent politicians into the PDP will naturally cause sleepless nights, especially to individuals and groups who have held down the state in a suffocating manner since 1999. Their reactions are therefore expected just like a dying horse is expected to kick the hardest at the point of its death”

The statement accused Akume of making grievous, unsubstantiated and indeed seditious allegations against the person and administration of Governor Ortom.

They mentioned issues like “Governor Ortom recruiting and arming militia in order to cause mayhem in 2019”.

“Even if Senator Akume was inebriated in consonance this particular allegation defies logic especially against the background of Governor Ortom’s internationally acclaimed decision to mop up small arms in the state through a well articulated Amnesty Programme. If the Governor had the intention of arming citizens, the cruel invasion and wanton killings by armed Fulani militia provided an ample opportunity to do so. He has on the contrary resisted the temptation to do so and turn the state into a theatre of bloodbath. If the governor disarmed hoodlums in the face of concerted attacks against his people, why does he need to re-arm them for an election he is confident of winning? In 2015, Governor Ortom won election popularly and overwhelmingly without the aid of any militia and there is no need whatsoever for him to resort to any illegal means to win reelection in 2019,” the statement explained.

Breaking News: EFCC - We didn’t freeze Senator Adeleke, Davido’s accounts

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied freezing the bank account of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke.

The anti-graft agency also said it did not place a freeze order on the accounts of members of his family, including popular musician, Davido.

The PDP had alleged that the accounts of Adeleke family members had been frozen, describing it as “a recipe for crisis in Osun”.

Spokesman of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement yesterday, said the allegation is false.

“The commission calls on members the public to disregard the report, which is patently false and contrived to dress the agency with a partisan garb in the unfolding political contest in Osun State,” NAN quoted him as saying.

“For the avoidance of doubt, at no time did the EFCC place a freeze order on any account belonging to members of the Adeleke family.

“The EFCC frowns at the seeming attempts by faceless forces to drag it into the political fray.”

Breaking News: UNFPA solicits media support on contraceptive awareness

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has called on media organisations to increase the awareness on the benefits of contraceptive use in Nigeria.

Dr. Mabingue Ngom, the UNFPA Regional Director for West and Central Africa Office, made the appeal while fielding questions at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja.

Ngom noted that the media had a role to play in addressing this social challenge where people do not know the importance of contraceptive use.

“Contraceptive or birth control is a device or drug used to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

“But in Nigeria, you have a low contraceptive prevalence rate and I feel that the media should be able to enlighten the public about it.

“The biggest contributor to the lack of knowledge about the uptake of available options was a result of low awareness and misconceptions about the use of contraceptives.

“There is no doubt that contraceptive lie at the heart of proper Family Planning (FP) and FP is a key factor in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030,” he said.

He added that when women and young girls are uninformed about their health, they would continue to make wrong decisions about their own bodies.

He cautioned that the country would continue to have large number of young people that the working age population would not be able to cater for, if not tackled now.

Breaking News: Senator Saraki - I cannot be impeached as Senate president

Breaking News: Senator Saraki - I cannot be impeached as Senate president

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has boasted that he can never be impeached, saying All Progressives Congress, APC, championing the cause is in minority and does not have the powers to carry out the threat.

He also made it clear that he would never step down as Senate president as demanded by the APC.

According to him, succumbing to such calls will only amount to sacrificing the national interest of the country for personal interest.

Saraki, who spoke in an interview with newsmen in Minna, Niger State, as part of his presidential campaign, yesterday, said: “The APC members know that we are in the majority and whatever they want to do they know that they don’t have the number.

“The other kite they are trying to fly is asking me to step down from my seat but I can tell you that this cannot be possible as I will not step down.

“One thing is very clear and that is to say that I will not sacrifice the interest of the country for my personal interest and in the last three years as a Senate president, I have demonstrated that my interest is second to that of the nation.”

He condemned the calls from various quarters on the Senate to suspend its recess and resume, adding that it was a collective decision by all members to adjourn and that the recess was under the ambit of law.

He said the National Assembly has, therefore, not contravened any section of the procedures in embarking on the recess and reconvene when it was time to resume from break.

Meanwhile, former Nigeria Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd), has assured Saraki on his presidential ambition saying: “It is my turn to do what your father did to me.”

Babangida, who made this known when Saraki visited him as part of his campaign tour for the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, convention, said he would treat the Senate presidential aspirant as his own son.

IBB said: “I remember when I was still in office, I spoke with your father, Oloye Saraki, who was always providing advice on a number of things attached to this country.

“He always made himself available to me, to give advice and encouragement, which will move the country forward. Your visit today is historical, now it is your time and turn to come to me and I will do just that.”

“You mentioned three things that are very dear to us as military, and we fought to get them to preserve them. They are unity of the country, the security of lives and economic development.

“The security of the people and the well being of the ordinary man are the right objectives for campaign and leadership for this country.”

Earlier, Saraki had told Babangida that Nigeria was now at a crossroad, adding that what the country needed now was a leader that could unite everybody.

He vowed to fight poverty and secure the life and property of all Nigerians, if voted as the President of the country next year.

Breaking News: Governor Fayose dares DMO, banks to publish Ekiti’s debt profile

Breaking News: Governor Fayose dares DMO, banks to publish Ekiti’s debt profile

Following allegation by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, committed the state to N117 billion debt, the governor has dared institutions in charge of debt management in the country to immediately publish the debt profile of the state.

Fayose said he had not committed the state to any debt either by taking bond or borrowing from any financial institution since he assumed office for the second term on October 16, 2014 till date.

The governor challenged the Debt Management Office (DMO) and his accuser, the APC to publish any debt he owes on behalf of the state since he assumed office in 2014.

Fayose described as a blatant lie and cheap blackmail, the allegation raised by the Governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, claiming that the state’s debt profile, according to the data they allegedly obtained from the DMO currently stands at N117 billion.

The governor, who spoke yesterday in a press briefing to journalists at the new governor’s office, justified the purchase of a new vehicle for himself and approval of the severance packages of his deputy and himself.

“When Fayemi was leaving as governor in 2014, he left with a car and so did other governors before him. So, you can’t expect me also not to have a befitting car when I am leaving office.

“Fayemi himself ordered a Jeep of almost N7 million for me when l was still Governor-elect in 2014, but he didn’t pay for it. I had also bought a Jeep for former Governor Niyi Adebayo to honour him. That is how it is done every four years.

“If Fayemi’s government wants to probe me, I will present myself and would not behave like a coward like he did. I have served Ekiti State; l have given my best. Relevant documents will be handed over to the in-coming administration at the appropriate time,” he assured.

Commenting on the debt profile of Ekiti, Fayose said, “I have not committed Ekiti State to one Naira debt since I assumed office as governor for the second term. I haven’t borrowed from any financial institutions. They should stop just saying it and publish any record of debt from any bank or the Debt Management Office (DMO) as evidence. I did not take any bond or borrow from any financial bank.

“In my first tenure, I left N10.4 billion in the coffers of government but I started this administration on October 16, 2014 meeting huge debt incurred by my predecessor, Fayemi.

“The last administration of Fayemj brought Ekiti to N25 billion bond and N32 billion commercial loan and the state will pay the bond until year 2022. The commercial loan was restructured like it was done for other states,” he claimed.

Governor Fayose blamed his inability to offset workers’ outstanding salaries on the federal government’s alleged deliberate refusal to pay debts it owed Ekiti.

“The federal government recently paid Osun State over N16 billion but deliberately refused to pay Ekiti the budget support of two months and refund of road project. They are waiting for when Fayemi will be sworn in and pay him. That is okay with me as long as the ordinary Ekiti man benefit from it. Ekiti owns the money. “

Breaking News: Minister Amaechi - I’m not sure Senator Abe is still in APC

Breaking News: Minister Amaechi - I’m not sure Senator Abe is still in APC

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said he is not sure if the lawmaker representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Magnus Abe, is still a member of the All Progressives Congress.

Amaechi said this in a statement by his Media Office on Sunday.

The Minister, who is the leader of the APC in Rivers State and the South-South zone, disagreed with comments credited to Abe at the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja that he (Amaechi) remained his (Abe) leader.

Amaechi said: “I am not Magnus Abe’s leader. Abe has long left me and the political family that was largely responsible for his rise and fame in politics. How can I be Abe’s leader when he and the minions sponsored by him, privately and publicly abuse, insult and cast aspersions on me, my wife and members of my family daily? Is that how a follower treats his leader?

“It’s cheap and indeed shameful political sophistry for Abe to stand in the APC secretariat and deceitfully say I am his leader while all he has done, both privately and publicly in recent times, are to undermine me, the APC and desecrate the APC in Rivers State.

“As a matter of fact, it is indeed very doubtful if Senator Abe is still in the APC. He mouths APC, but his actions belly his words and clearly tell a different story.

“A man, who wakes up, creates an imaginary parallel party executive and went ahead to open an office for the non-existent parallel executive that has no base and foundation, cannot be said to be committed in any way to the party.

“As a matter of fact, his actions are obviously targeted at weakening and destroying the party. Such a hypocritical, devious character cannot be my follower. I am not his leader.”

Breaking News: NDDC boss gets kudos for Ikot Akpaden-Okoroette Road completion

Youths from Eastern Obolo, an Ijaw-speaking local government area in Akwa Ibom State, have commended the Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Nsima Ekere, for completing the reconstruction of Ikot Akpaden-Okoroette Road, the only access road to their area.

The youths, on the platform of ‘One Sure Project,’ drawn from all 10 wards of Eastern Obolo, commended Ekere during a solidarity visit to his residence in Uyo, last Saturday.

Speaking through their leader, Mr. Ama Williams, the youths urged Ekere to contest the 2019 governorship election in Akwa Ibom, with a promise of total support in Eastern Obolo as grassroots’ mobilisers in the creeks.

“This is an opportunity we don’t want you to miss,” Williams said.

In his response, Ekere disclosed that more projects have been allocated for Eastern Obolo in the 2018 NDDC budget, in recognition of Eastern Obolo’s importance as a major oil-producing area and to redress the neglect by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) State Government.

“We will triple all the projects we are doing in Eastern Obolo,” he promised.

Breaking News: Governor Yari’s convoy attacked by aggrieved APC members

Breaking News: Governor Yari’s convoy attacked by aggrieved APC members

The convoy of the Zamfara State Governor, Abdul’aziz Yari, was on Sunday attacked by aggrieved members of his own party, APC, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Yari, whose Zamfara State is suffering from attacks by armed bandits, is also the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum.

NAN reports that some APC supporters attacked the governor’s convoy at Lalan Roundabout in Gusau on Sunday as he was travelling to Kaduna.

Seven aggrieved governorship hopefuls, including the deputy governor, Ibrahim Wakkala, had organised a rally in Gusau on Sunday, where a multitude of their supporters turned out to receive them.

While the rallying aspirants and their supporters were coming into town, they ran into the governor’s convoy and the irate crowd attacked the governor’s motorcade destroying glasses.

However, the quick intervention of the mobile police and governor’s security details who fired gunshots in the air, dispersed the mob.

NAN reports that calm has since been restored in the state capital after the confrontation.

The exact reason for the attack is not clear but is related to selecting an APC candidate that will take over from Yari whose tenure ends next year.

Yari has condemned the attack on his convoy.

Yari, in a statement issued on Sunday in Gusau by Ibrahim Dosara, his Special Adviser on Media and Public Enlightenment, cautioned his loyalists to desist from revenge.

He urged people of the state to be law-abiding citizens and avoid any form of violence in the name of politics.

“Any law-abiding citizen needs to respect the peaceful atmosphere concerning politics in Zamfara.”

The governor said that his administration had done a lot to stop loyalists and all youth, especially supporters of APC, from engaging in any activity that would endanger the peace among political associations and parties.

He urged politicians to enlighten their supporters on peace and stability in relations to all political associations and gatherings.

At the rally that led to the attack, the seven APC governorship aspirants called for direct primaries.

In his remarks, Mamuda Shikafi, a former governor of the state and one of the aspirants, said that the rally was organised to draw the attention of the party at the national level to the issue of imposition of candidates.

Shinkafi said, “We will continue to be loyal to the party and governments of at all levels; however, our only concern is justice and equity to the entire citizens of the state.”

He said what was needed in the state was true democratic process that gives equal opportunity to every party member to participate.

He said no one was after the candidature of anybody but the concern was imposition of candidates by the state governor.

The seven aspirants in their separate speeches, considered direct primaries as the only way to sustain the unity of the party in the state.

They agreed that one person would finally emerge as the candidate under the platform of the party.

They underscored the need for a transparent that would lead to the choice of an acceptable candidate.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the seven aspirants are Mamuda Shinkafi, Ibrahim Wakkala, Aminu Jaji, Sagir Hamidu, Mansur Ali, Abu Magaji and Dauda Dare.

Breaking News: Governor Dickson asks President Buhari to take action against Timipre Sylva, Senator Lokpobiri over insecurity in Bayelsa

Breaking News: Governor Dickson asks President Buhari to take action against Timipre Sylva, Senator Lokpobiri over insecurity in Bayelsa

Bayelsa State Governor, Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of allowing a former governor of the state, Timipre Sylva, and the Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, to undermine the security of his state.

He also expressed shock that the President has failed to take any action against the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and their cohorts who cause mayhem in the state despite making several reports and complaints to him and the security agencies.

Governor Dickson in a rare press release by his Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, said: “The president has allowed common criminals and terrorists such as Sylva and Lokpobiri to unleash violence on their people while the Inspector General of Police is sitting in Abuja to direct investigation of a petition against the Brass Council chairman. At the moment, they are attacking innocent people in Brass, who are members of the PDP, with people bloodied and houses burnt all in a bid to destabilise the state.”

The governor accused the APC leaders in the state, including Sylva and Lokpobiri, of using the security agencies to shield criminals, intimidate and harass innocent citizens.

He also pointedly accused the legislator representing the Brass Constituency 1 in the state House of Assembly, Israel Sunny-Goli, of being responsible for the mayhem in Brass and that he was being shielded by Sylva and Lokpobiri in cahoots with security agencies.

He called for his arrest and prosecution for various crimes, including murder, thuggery and cultism in his constituency and the whole of Brass Local Government Area.

Governor Dickson said if Sunny-Goli is not arrested and prosecuted by the law enforcement agencies, he would personally mobilise the people of the state to arrest him.

He stressed that the police authorities and the Department of State Services (DSS) had failed to arrest the lawmaker despite the plethora of petitions against him in the state because he belonged to the APC.

According to him, Sunny-Goli was one of the kingpins of cultism in the state responsible for several unresolved murders.

“Sunny-Goli is a criminal and a fugitive, who is running away from the law. He is responsible for several deaths in the state and runs to Abuja to seek refuge. The police authorities cannot continue to condone acts of criminality simply because Sunny-Goli (also known as Adi) is a member of the APC. The law must not be applied selectively.

“The position of the Bayelsa State Government is that Sunny-Goli has to be arrested. We are asking the IG and the DSS to take steps to prevent an abuse of their powers by someone who terrorises innocent people.

“I will mobilise the people of this state to arrest him since the law enforcement agencies cannot do it. As governor of this state, I do not and will not condone criminal acts by any individual no matter his position in the state. I have a zero tolerance for criminality and lawlessness.”

The Bayelsa helmsman said Sunny-Goli has several pending cases before the police and the DSS for which he was invited but that he shunned the invitation to seek protection in Abuja from where he wrote a frivolous petition that resulted in Thursday’s invasion of the homes of the interim chairman of the Brass council, Victor Isaiah, and that of the former chairman of the APC in the state, Chief Timipa Tiwei Orunimighe, who recently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He insisted that Isaiah who was invited by the police would honour the invitation when the security agencies act on the earlier petitions against the lawmaker that was being protected by the agencies.
