Niece of 106-year-old woman claims single life is the secret to living longer

Could the secret to living a long life be single life? A woman who is related to someone who has lived for over a century has shared her views on long life and what she believes is the secret to it.

Diana Heaton, the 80-year-old niece of a woman who has lived for 106 years, expressed that she believes that her aunt"s longevity is due to being single. She stated that her aunt avoided the stress that comes with marriage and relationships. The 106-year-old woman who was identified as Madeline Dye lives in South Yorkshire, England. Dye was born in 1912, she worked as a bookbinder. Heaton who revealed that her aunt never had a boyfriend, explained that her aunt did not live in a nursing home until she was 103 years old. She noted that the woman was moved to the nursing home after she had a bad fall.

She stated that Dye has always been independent. She had lived on her own, cooked for herself and maintained the house herself. Heaton said: “She does still dress herself and goes into the common room and chats with people. She has a great sense of humor still, she has never lost it. Whenever anyone asks her about her past romances or if she has a husband, she says, ‘I’ve never had one, that’s why I’m this age.’ She says she has not had the stresses of marriage; it’s tongue-in-cheek more than anything. She has always loved her clothes and has always dressed immaculately.”

She added: “When she was 103, she asked if I could change some curtains for her in a bedroom." "I said I would do it the next day and when I arrived she said "do you like the curtains - look what I"ve done?’ She changed them and carried some steps from the cellar up the stairs to her front bedroom.”

The old woman celebrated her birthday when she clocked 106, at the Norton Lees Hall care home where she resides. She also took a trip with her family to Baslow, England.

‘We didn’t censor Falz’s “This is Nigeria” before it was released’ – Nigerian Film Censors Board

National Film And Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Abuja, has reacted to Falz’ hit music video ‘this is Nigeria’ in which he had female choreographers dancing Shaku-Shaku in Hijab and addressed several other issues affecting the nation.

‘We didn’t censor Falz’s “This is Nigeria” before it was released’ – Nigerian Film Censors Board_2

The Director, Licensing Department of the NFVCB, Cornell Agim ,the agency in charge of censorship and rating of music videos and movies revealed to veteran entertainment journalist Rasheed Abubaka, that Falz didn’t bring his music video for licensing and rating before he released it to the public and unfortunately, the agency’s monitoring team hasn’t reported the video to the directorate.

He said that, though it is their job is to censor and rate videos before they get to the public, they can’t be everywhere. That is why journalists and members of the public affected by the visuals are expected to notify them. With that, they can investigate the videos.
‘We didn’t censor Falz’s “This is Nigeria” before it was released’ – Nigerian Film Censors Board_4

In his words, ‘the agency do censorship and rating of music video before it gets to the general public. We ensure we do analysis of those videos. We also try as much as possible not to tamper with the creative intention of any artiste except they come with some obscenity, which we most time kick against. BUT Falz didn’t bring his music video for licensing before it gets to the public. As the Director of Licensing, I haven’t seen the video. Same as the agency. None of our monitoring team has brought it to my notice. Hence, we didn’t censor it before it gets to the public.

He added that,

‘the truth is, most time we can’t reach out. We are handicap because we are not everywhere and we can’t be everywhere. That’s why people like you (journalists) should notify us once you see things like that. Bring them to our notice and we’ll investigate it and bring the perpetrators to book. Often time, we get complain from Nigerians, saying what’s the agency doing? We are trying our best though our best might not be good enough. That’s why we need people like you to supply us with information about the affected song.

The agency do organise sensational programmes for filmmakers and music video doctors. We held one recently in Bauchi, we called it consultative forum but many of them didn’t come. You invite them, they won’t come. Some of them will even ask you for transportation fee. We also print out handouts containing guidelines. If you visit our website, there are relevant materials on licensing and rating. But are they visiting the site? Are they reading the uploaded materials? Despite our efforts in sanitizing the industry, some of them would prefer to break the rules’.

Breaking News: Zinedine Zidane has resigned as Real Madrid Manager

Breaking News: Zinedine Zidane has resigned as Real Madrid Manager

The Frenchman has officially stepped down as manager of Real Madrid

What"s the story?

According to reports, Zinedine Zidane has stepped down as manager of Real Madrid, just days after helping them to their third successive Champions League title in as many years. Their 13th overall in the competition"s history.

Zidane took over at Real in January 2016 as Rafa Benitez"s replacement after working with the club"s Castilla side. Los Blancos defeated Atletico Madrid to win on penalties to win the Champions League that season before beating Juventus last year and Liverpool on Saturday.

Zidane, who is under contract until 2020 in Madrid, offered little suggestion he would walk away after the 3-1 victory in Kiev but he has decided the time is right to leave the Bernabeu.

"I"ve taken the decision to not continue next year as #RealMadrid Coach. I made this decision because I love this club, I love (Florentino Perez) and I am grateful towards him."

-Zinedine Zidane

"I would"ve liked to have convinced him to stay but I know what he"s like.Real Madrid president Florentino Perez: "I would"ve liked to have convinced him to stay but I know what he"s like. It has been completely unexpected. It has been impossible to convince him. Real will be his home forever."

-Florentino Perez

In case you didn"t know...

The Frenchman has long been in the eye of the Spanish media storm for some time now. Despite landing a hat-trick of Champions League titles including a double last season. Even Cristiano Ronaldo"s last two Ballon d"Ors have come under his tutelage.

So it wouldn"t be too far-fetched to think that the World Cup winner has done enough to not just prove his undisputed worth as manager but also provide him some further runway at the Spanish Capital.

However, nothing could be further from the truth as the maestro continuously find himself in the cross-hairs of the Spanish press, who never seem contend with Zidane"s work despite him legitimately rewriting history.

Despite his most recent success in the most elite competition in Europe, his third on the trot(!), Zinedine Zidane was far from secure in his job at Madrid as many of the players hinting that they"re far from happy at the club.

Gareth Bale had reacted unceremoniously after that overhead kick in the final to imply that he might move on this summer before the spotlight was stolen all over again by a Portuguese who went on to express the same emotion.

Isco had also taken a swipe at his manager a little while ago for his man management style and his perceived injustice at the lack of playing time under the Frenchman.

Heart of the matter

Alarm bells had been set off in Madrid after Real, out of the blue, announced that Zinedine Zidane and Florentino Perez will appear in front of the gazing eyes of the Spanish press in an unscheduled press conference.

Honestly, we thought it could be for anything. Maybe Zidane would come in front of the cameras and announce that he got an emergency hair transplant operation done. Maybe he"d have glowing luscious hair that runs all the way to the ground to back his words.

Because the alternative was one that involves one of the greatest clubs parting ways with (already) one of the greatest managers in the game at the moment.

Unfortunately though, it was the more reasonable explanation that turned out to be reality as the man who won Europe"s elite competition as both player and manager for Los Blancos decided to call it quits at Real Madrid.

Three Champions League titles the Frenchman"s tenure at the club draws to a close. How could he have done more to assure the board or the fans or the press is beyond us. Even though he insists it is completely his decision we reckon the continuous hounding by the talking heads in the Spanish capital had plenty to do with it as well

More to follow. Keep watching this space.

Do you think Zidane leaving is justified? What is in-store next for both club and manager? Have your say in the comments section.

Breaking News: PSG Want Cristiano Ronaldo, Prepared to Pay €150M for Real Madrid Star

Breaking News: PSG Want Cristiano Ronaldo, Prepared to Pay €150M for Real Madrid Star

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly told Real Madrid they want to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer as club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi looks to complete his "dream" front line of the Portuguese star, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

According to Manu Sainz of AS, PSG are willing to pay €150 million (£131 million) to sign Ronaldo—his release clause is €1 billion—and they would pay him a net salary of €45 million (£39 million) to bring him in line with Barcelona"s Lionel Messi.

Talk of Ronaldo departing the Santiago Bernabeu has increased lately in the wake of some choice comments made by the 33-year-old after Real won their third successive UEFA Champions League on Saturday, per Spanish football writer Dermot Corrigan:

PSG are one of the few sides in the world with the financial clout and ambition to attract Ronaldo, but there are sure to be a number of reasons why a move for the former Manchester United man to the Parc des Princes may not go through.

Sainz highlighted two obstacles: the prospect of Ronaldo"s switch facilitating Neymar"s move the other way, and financial fair play restrictions.

Neymar, 26, only moved to PSG from Barcelona for £200 million last summer but rumours have abounded that Real are interested in taking him back to Spain, per Sabrina Belalmi of Goal.

It is surely a guarantee that, were PSG to move for Ronaldo and Real were prepared to let him go, Los Blancos would look to use the deal to sign Neymar for themselves.

Meanwhile, PSG"s transfer activity last summer, where they signed Kylian Mbappe in an expensive loan-to-buy deal, as well as shelling out on Neymar, has already prompted an investigation into a breach of UEFA"s financial fair play rules, per Murad Ahmed of the Financial Times.

It seems unlikely PSG would be able to shell out a further €150 million on Ronaldo, while keeping Neymar and Mbappe at the club, without arousing further suspicions and risking potential sanctions.

Breaking News: 2019: How election rigging can end in Nigeria – Soyinka

Breaking News: 2019: How election rigging can end in Nigeria – Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka yesterday said tackling corruption would address electoral rigging that has dented Nigeria’s democratic system.

Soyinka spoke at the 60th birthday colloquium of the Executive Editor, The News/PM News, Mr. Kunle Ajibade entitled: “A Brighter Future for Nigeria and how to get there.”

Prof. Soyinka said: “If we can solve issues of corruption, we will also be addressing cases of election rigging. This is because there is a direct nexus between that level of corruption and the degradation of democratic process that we have witnessed in the country.

“If we had solved the cases properly, it would have helped curb corruption and solve the issue of democratic failure in Nigeria.”

While speaking on his thinking before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, prosecuted former Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun, Soyinka hinted that he believed top echelon in the force were untouchable.

He said: “Among those that I believe were untouchable before were the police but not those that were on the streets harassing and collecting money from people. I know that of all government institutions, the police were often involved in profiling corrupt persons. But the question that later baffled me was who then corrupted the police? Who made sure that the agencies enforcing law were corrupt?

“And that was why when I met former EFCC chairman, Malam Nuhu Ribadu after former IGP, Tafa Balogun was arrested, I emphasised that the job of fighting corruption doesn’t end with the person holding the money but also how he got the money or how the money got into his bank account.”

Breaking News: Nigeria Police: OPC blows hot, warns SARS to stop harassing citizens

Founder of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Dr. Frederick Fasehun has called on the leadership of the Nigeria Police to call operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) to order.

He said the personnel had lost focus and usually acted as if Nigeria was under siege.

Fasehun, who spoke with newsmen in Lagos yesterday condemned clear “breaches and violation of citizens’ fundamental rights on daily basis”.

Fasehun said: “Today, Nigerians appear to be under siege. From the North to the South, from the East to the West, all parts of the country are militarized and turned into a virtual police state.

“The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) has lost focus. Instead of implementing its primary objective of curtailing armed robbery in the country, it has turned itself into an army of occupation, harassing and pilfering money from innocent citizens.

“What we see now is that police arrest and intimidate people into confessing to crimes they know nothing about without respecting their right to legal counsel and representation. This must stop”.

On the state of the nation vis a vis the Democracy Day celebrations, the OPC leader said there was little to cheer.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to “lead all arms of the Executive in the protection and continued sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy, in collaboration with the Legislature, the Judiciary, the Media and Civil Society.”

Breaking News: Nyame: Muslim group reacts to imprisonment of ex-Governor

Breaking News: Nyame: Muslim group reacts to imprisonment of ex-Governor

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has reacted to the sentencing of Ex-Governor Jolly Nyame to 14 years imprisonment.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory headed by Justice Adebukola Banjoko yesterday found Nyame guilty of corruption.

MURIC Director, Ishaq Akintola, in a statement, commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for doing a thorough investigation.

It commended the judge, noting that her pronouncement will serve as a deterrent for other kleptomaniacs in public service.

The group also hailed the Federal Government for vigorously pursuing the war against corruption.

MURIC added: “Nyame’s imprisonment has cemented the resolve of this administration to bring about change in Nigeria. This will bring to five the number of ex-governors sent to jail since the beginning of President Muhammadu Buhari’s war against corruption.

“Although he was later set free, James Bala Ngilari, ex-governor of Adamawa State, bagged five years in March 2017. Babangida Aliyu, former Niger State governor, tasted the bitter pill on 25th April, 2017 when he was remanded in prison.

“Sule Lamido, ex-governor of Jigawa State was also remanded in prison on 2nd May, 2017. Jonah Jang, the former governor of Plateau State was remanded in prison custody on May 16, 2018. It is an unprecedented challenge of the status quo ante.

“MURIC therefore calls on Nigerians to show appreciation for this positive development. It implies that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Those who had lost hope in the Nigerian project should now reposition themselves as more evidence has emerged to prove that the stage is set for a better Nigeria.

“The main reason for people losing hope in this country has been the general lack of accountability. Crooks in government were stealing with impunity and nobody was ever questioned or arrested. Our values were bastardised.

“Criminals were celebrated. But change is here. Those who stole our common patrimony are now being made to face the music. It therefore behoves true patriots to rally behind President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration.”

Akwa Ibom Abandons Top Multi-Billion Naira College

Akwa Ibom Abandons Top Multi-Billion Naira College

Akwa Ibom Abandons Top Multi-Billion Naira College-

Apart from many of its schools being dilapidated, Akwa Ibom also has shortage of public schools.

This state of five million people has just 250 public secondary schools, a 2016 data shows. And a number of those schools, including the four science colleges and the seven technical colleges, are in ruins.

Among the neglected lots, the Government Technical College, Ikot Ada Idem, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, presents a shocking irony. It had state-of-the-art facilities, well-built classrooms and top quality teachers when poor planning by the state government led to its abandonment.

These facilities are now rotting away, a development that has infuriated not a few taxpayers.

Built more than 30 years ago, the school was shut down seven years ago when the government proposed converting it to a faculty of engineering of the state-owned polytechnic. In line with that plan, the college’s 2000 students were transferred to other schools in the state. It was then shut down, and left unused for years.

Because it has been abandoned for so long, the 14 classroom blocks, the administrative offices, the assembly hall, and the technical workshops in the school are now at various stages of decay.

The roofs of the buildings have collapsed, while weeds have grown tall inside them. Tall grasses overshadowed the staff quarters and other buildings when this reporter visited in early April.

Standing by the side of the staff quarters was a collapsed building which used to serve as the college refectory. Adjacent it was another collapsed building.

The technical equipment worth tens of millions of dollars were rotting away.

A section of the school facility was already taken over by herdsmen who resided there with their cattle, while another section was occupied by squatters said to be returnees from the contentious Bakassi Penisula.

Some of the Bakassi returnees were cooking in a classroom that had become their makeshift kitchen when this reporter visited the facility in October 2017. Malnourished kids ran around, naked.

A repeat visit to the abandoned college on April 14 showed that nothing had changed so far; the herdsmen and the Bakassi returnees were still occupying the premises. There were signs that the corridors connecting the various blocks in the school were now being used as makeshift kitchen as well.

The abandoned college, with its classic architectural design, sits on a large expanse of land by the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene-Aba Highway. It can be easily spotted as you drive through the highway, a few kilometers from Uyo.

Breaking News: Biafra: IPOB, Inter society hail sit-at-home compliance

Breaking News: Biafra: IPOB, Inter society hail sit-at-home compliance

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has commended those it described as ‘Biafrans and lovers of freedom all over Biafraland’ for honouring the sit-at-home it declared today.

The group said even ‘various parts of Southern Nigeria’ contributed immensely towards the successful outcome of the protest meant to honour and remember its heroes.

A press release by Emma Powerful, Media and publicity secretary said by sitting at home as directed by the leadership of IPOB, the people had exhibited uncommon courage, determination and resoluteness of all Biafrans.

It said, “You defied the military threats, intimidation from Arewa Consultative Forum and South East governors to sit-at-home across the length and breadth of Biafraland.

“We commend the people of Ogoni, Idoma, Igede, Igala and others who afforded to observe and remember those that sacrificed their lives for us to be alive today. From Ogoja in the east to the border town of Igbanke in the west; from the Oturkpo in the north to the island of Bonny in the south, Biafrans observed in their own unique way a day of solemnity, reverence and respect for our departed heroes.

“We also salute the indefatigable spirit of IPOB family members in the diaspora that rallied in over 100 countries across Europe, Asia, America, Australia, South America and Africa. From the rising of the sun in the east to its setting in the west, all over the world, Biafra resonated like never before.

“We are even more grateful to the people of Ebonyi and Anambra States for standing firm to honour our heroes and in the process calmly reminded Gov. Dave Umahi and Willie Obiano that Ebonyi and Anambra are not yet the Fulani outpost they are seeking to make it. Both states are firmly Biafran states and shall remain so long after they are gone from this earth.

“If one thing became clearer as a result of this 2018 sit-at-home, it is the fact that people listen to IPOB not South East governors or Ohaneze Ndigbo.”

Also, the chairman board of trustees of International Society for Civil Liberties and the rule of Law, Intersociety, Mr Emeka Umeagbalasi said the sit at home was a huge success.

He said, “Those in blue collar setting marked it both in their minds and physically by shutting down their places of business While those in white collar setting or civil servants also marked it in their mind on account of the nature of their job that made it difficult for them to shut down their places of work in solidarity with fallen heroes of Igbo land.”

Umuagbalasi said the exercise was a strong message to the Buhari administration that so long as the anti Igbo and Christian butchering continued across the country, with the Government paying lip service, Nigeria will never progress as one peaceful country.

He said “The sit at home is also the newest most effective nonviolent expressions capable of ending senseless killings by the army and police of our unarmed population

“It is also called ghost street protest designed to frustrate blood thirsty and grossly lopsided security forces which derive joy killing innocent and defenseless Igbo youth population. It is finally a mark of immortal respect for our brothers and sisters sent to their early graves by State army and non state actor.”

Breaking News: Sit-at-home: Again, IPOB, pro-Biafra groups shut down parts of south east

Breaking News: Sit-at-home: Again, IPOB, pro-Biafra groups shut down parts of south east

In what can be described as about 70 per cent compliance of the sit-at home order at the instance of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday, many parts of the south east zone were shut down for business and other economic activities apart from Ebonyi and a few other places that recorded skeletal activities. The sit-at-home was in remembrance of Biafran fallen heroes and those killed in the struggle for the actualization of Biafra. Reports across states in the south east revealed that shops, markets and banks were shut down in Enugu, Aba, Onitsha and Nnewi while Awka and Ebonyi recorded activities. Similarly, sit-at-home order was ignored in Owerri and Umuahia.

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State had during his May 29th Democracy celebration warned that any trader that closed his shop in line with the directive of IPOB would forfeit it forever.

In Awka, what was perceived as fear of what might happen kept most people indoors in the morning hours, even as those who carried out their businesses had nothing to worry about.

Banks in Awka also operated without any molestation, just as government and private offices were also open for businesses.
How the sit-at-home was observed:

Total compliance in Enugu

Enugu State witnessed total compliance in observing the day.

A tour around Enugu town by Vanguard showed that few movements were noticed as shops, markets and schools remain closed with few people seen around, although few commercial transport businesses were seen making brisk business and picking up few commuters who had come out.

At the ever busy Main Market Enugu, nearly all the shops were closed. The few opened shops were seen selling to few customers who came to make purchases.

A visit to some secondary schools and tertiary institutions in Enugu showed total compliance in the remembrance day celebration.

Nsukka

In Nsukka, business and social engagements were on partially as few people were seen moving about major spots in the area.

At Ogige market, few traders were seen opening their shops and business places while many others were under lock and key.

Other traders were seen milling around in front of their shops, while others gathered in small groups chatting and conversing about the day’s development.

“They said we should not open our shops, so, I just decided to come around and see what is happening. I just want to be around my shop in case something bad happens,” Okey Eze, one of the traders in the market said.

At some transport companies in the area, few buses were seen parked in the premises with few commuters purchasing tickets for their journey.

“They said we should not open our shops, so, I just decided to come around and see what is happening. I just want to be around my shop in case something bad happens,” Okey Eze, one of the traders in the market said.
Shops, schools, banks closed in Onitsha

All the Federal highways especially Onitsha-Enugu expressway, from Asaba end of the road to Zik’s Roundabout to New Motor Spare Parts Nkpor, down to former Ogbunike Toll gate were ghosts of themselves as motorists and people deserted the roads in observance of the sit-at-home order.

There was total compliance in Onitsha and Nnewi with all the markets and shops in the two cities shut. Commercial banks in the two cities, roads and streets markets all observed the directive as people stayed back in their homes in observance of the directive.

As early as 6am when Vanguard visited Upper Iweka, while returning from Nnewi, Upper Iweka which is known for its busy nature was deserted, even Newspaper distribution to Owerri and Awka was impossible as vehicles that distribute them were no where to be seen.
IPOB member shot in Nnewi
Even with the total compliance of the sit-at-home order in Nnewi, a member of the IPOB was allegedly shot in a clash with a combined team of the Army and Police at St Mary’s Anglican Church junction Nnewi.
According to an eye witness, as early as 7:30am, some people suspected to be members of IPOB started making bonfire and blocking the roads. When they were accosted by the combined team of Police and Army who tried to stop them, there was altercation which led to the shooting of the victim at St Mary’s Anglican Church junction.
“The incident resulted to gathering of people in small groups, discussing the IPOB issues in low tunes, while the Police, Army and local vigilance groups on joint patrol moved from street to street clearing the roads for vehicular and human movement,” an eye witness said.
No movement in Port Harcourt
There was huge success of the order in many areas of Rivers State, especially Port-Harcourt where most businesses are owned and operated by Igbos.
At Oyibo Local Government area of the state, the border LGA of Abia State, business activities were totally paralysed as the order witnessed total compliance.
The popular Ikoku spare parts market and some shops were opened for business activities. The same situation was replicated at Garrison market and Kala iron market.
A business owner at Mile 1 Market, who simply gave his name as Uchechukwu said the order was not binding on every Igbo man, adding that it was “for those who believe in the activities of IPOB that are mandated to obey the order.”
Tragedy in Aba
Tragedy struck in Aba, Abia State when soldiers shot dead a young man near Uratta junction, Port Harcourt Road area of the city.

Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that some hoodlums invaded the area and started enforcing the sit -at-home order, stopping residents who were going about their businesses.
“Some hoodlums came to the road and started harassing people that they should go home because of the order. As they were forcing people to obey the order, a patrol team of soldiers came to the area and started shooting. People ran away but a stray bullet hit a young man,” the eye witness said.
However, there was total compliance as markets, banks and other business centres were shut. Schools were also shut while the roads in the city were deserted as there was no vehicular movement.
Sit-at-home fails in Abakaliki
The IPOB order flopped in Ebonyi State, as citizens of the state were seen going about their normal businesses without harassment and intimidation
When Vanguard visited the Abakaliki Main Market, meat market and Kpirikpiri markets within the metropolis around 9am, they were all opened for business as a joint patrol of security agencies with over 20 vehicles were seen patrolling the streets of the city to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
However, major transport companies like Peace Mass and Ebotrans as at the time of this report were not loading to Aba, Onitsha and Port Harcourt, where they felt people would obey the sit-at-home order of IPOB.
Shops opened in Awka
FEAR of what might happen kept most people in Awka indoors in the morning hours of yesterday following the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, even as those who carried out their businesses had nothing to worry about.
Apart from the commercial city of Onitsha and the industrial town of Nnewi, where business activities were paralyzed in the morning, markets and shops in Awka, the state capital, were opened for business.
Banks in Awka also operated without any molestation, just as government and private offices were also open for businesses.
Vanguard gathered that the leadership of Okada riders held a meeting on Tuesday during which they decided not to observe the sit-at-home, which was why they operated freely in all parts of the capital territory.
In other parts of Anambra State, such as Ihiala, Ekwulobia, Otuocha, Umunze, among others, business activities took place without any hindrance.
Security men were also seen moving in convoys, obviously to ensure that no one was molested.
Reacting on the non compliance in some cities, the IPOB media and publicity secretary, Mr. Emma Powerful said in a telephone interview that it was as a result of attempts by the South East governors to sabotage the event.
Powerful said that in Port Harcourt where he monitored the sit-at-home exercise, the people complied fully, and wondered why core Igbo cities like Awka would do otherwise, if not for the activities of the governors.
Some people who spoke to Vanguard said they stayed at home because they were not certain of what might happen on the streets.

Partial compliance in Owerri
The order was not completely obeyed in Owerri, Imo State.
In Owerri metropolis, some students were seen returning home before the 2pm closing hour.
However, there were free movement of motorists and commuters in the area monitored. Streets like, Wethedral, Douglas, Orji, Assumpta Avenue, Onitsha and Portharcourt were active.
When Vanguard visited Eke-Ukwu market, traders were seen buying and selling their wares.
“I lost two shops in the demolition of Eke Ukwu Market by the government. I lost millions in that act of wickedness. So I have to come out to sell my goods just to get money to feed my children,” said one of the traders, who gave his name only as Enyeribe.
Umuahia

Residents of Umuahia, the Abia State capital did not comply with the sit-at-home order of IPOB as commercial and social activities went on unhindered in the city.
Government offices were opened with civil servants at the State Secretariat going about their normal businesses; private and public schools were also open, except those who were on mid-term break, all the banks in the city opened for normal business as well as markets and shops on the streets.
Commercial vehicles, including Keke operators engaged in their normal businesses.
A civil servant, Emeka Ekwenyi said the sit-at-home was not necessary, as it would only end up inflicting hardship and at times injuries on the people.
“If the IPOB members decided to sit-at-home, it is okay for them, but they should impose it on the people. Like I said every Igbo man believes in Biafra but the way to get it is not the way IPOB goes about it. I think they should be civil and work with elders of the region”.
MASSOB leads coalition of pro-Biafra groups to support IPOB
Meanwhile, a coalition of pro-Biafra groups yesterday called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to reverse without further delay, the wrong labelling of peaceful non-violent unarmed people agitatitain for Biafra, particularly, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB as terrorist group.
The call was made by Dr Dozie Ikedife and MASSOB leader Comrade Uchenna at Rojenny Tourist Village during the coalitions 51st Annivinersary in celebration of a Biafra Declarationby Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
In an address presented by Dr Ikedife, he said: “All who are hungry for self determination for pepple of Biafra land through either legal process, diplomatic process, dialogue consuktation, referrandum or legislative process should come together and speak with one mind and voice.
“In-fighting is totally negative and counter productive, now that many groups have emerged, allare talking about one issue.”
Comrade Madu in his speech said: “We may disagree as a different groups due to ideological differences but we are all working together to achieve Biafra.”

Police arrests Onwuka, 21 Biafra
The Enugu State Police command said it arrested over twenty-one members of Biafra Zionist Federation, BZF, including it’s leader Mr. Benjamin Onwuka on the Biafra Day celebration.
Onwuka was recently granted bail after many years of incaceration for attempt to declare a republic of Biafra on an Enugu live radio.
Enugu State Police Spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu who confirmed arrest of Onwuka and others on Wednesday said: “Our operatives today nabbed the leader of Biafran Zionist Movement identified as one Bejamin Onwuka alongside some of his members numbering about 21.
“He was nabbed within the Enugu metropolis alongside his members based on the intelligence information.”
Onwuka has been standing trial in the court of competent court of jurisdiction over his alleged role of murder, Armed Robbery and unlawful possession of firearms before he resurfaced today but fell into the hands of the eagle eyed security operatives of the command.”
Amaraizu said the suspects were helping the operatives in their investigation.
He further noted that “there were movement of vehicles, commuters and traders within and outside the metropolis contrary to the early threat and order of SIT AT HOME.
“Security operatives were seen at strategic places just as shops, media houses, markets and banks were open to the members of the public.”zionists in Enugu

Biafra National Guard launches
Meanwhile, the Biafra National Gaurd, BNG, said they used the auspices of the Biafra Day to launch a transitional government, noting that the sit at home is a mark of respect and acceptance of the government of Biafra by the people.
Spokesman BNG, Nsikak Apkan said the Biafran Transitional Government will continue to oversee affairs pending when their leader shall make a live broadcast.
Nsikak Apkan in a press statement in Enugu revealed that the unveiling of the new government was for effective and speedy restoration of Biafra and “following the review of Biafran Shadow Government.”
He said: “The people of Biafra make neither war, nor peace, with the state or people of Nigeria, rather, we exercise a natural right, a popular right, a political right, and a right supported by United Nations Organisation Charter and International Laws- the right to Self-determination.”transitional govt
IPOB celebrates success of sit-at-home
Meantime, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday celebrated the success recorded in yesterday’s sit-at-home in the south-east and some parts of the south-south.
A statement issued by IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful reads:“We the family members of IPOB worldwide wish to congratulate all Biafrans and lovers of freedom all over Biafraland and various parts of Southern Nigeria who contributed immensely towards the successful outcome of our heroes remembrance day by sitting at home as directed by the leadership of IPOB. We salute the uncommon courage and resoluteness of all Biafrans that defied the military threats, intimidation from Arewa Consultative Forum and S’East governors to sit-at-home across the length and breadth of Biafraland.”

Many PDP members join APC in Jigawa

The Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, and his counterpart Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State, on Wednesday received several decampees from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa.

Mr Yari was in Jigawa to compliment President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent visit to the state. He was also billed to commission projects that were not commissioned by the president during his two-day working visit to the state.

The PDP had earlier described Mr Buhari’s visit to Jigawa as a laughable charade. It said the projects commissioned by the president were not worth mentioning.

But Mr Badaru said the projects were many and the president did not have ample time to commission them.

The event, which took place at Jahun Local Government Area of the state witnessed the commissioning of the Jahun township road and that of Gagarawa Bosowa.

At the event, the state party chairman, Sani Kiri commended the the leader of the decampees, Ibrahim Aujara for leading them (decampees) “to replace their PDP membership cards with that of the APC.”

Mr Kiri assured all the decampees of fair and equal treatment in the party.

Meanwhile, at the same event, irate youth protested against the member representing Jahun/Miga constituency, Sa’idu Miga, chanting derogatory songs even as they attempted to pull him out of his car. They were reportedly angry at his poor performance.

The police had to wade in by securing the lawmaker from the angry mob.

In his remarks, Mr Yari, described the mammoth crowd gathered at the occasion as overwhelming. He said Mr Badaru would not need to come back to the area for a reelection campaign going by the support he enjoys.

He also expressed satisfaction with the governor’s performance despite the low internally generated income of the state.

Mr Badaru commended President Buhari for Paris club refund and other interventions to the states.

Breaking News: How South-east cities responded to IPOB’s sit-at-home order

Breaking News: How South-east cities responded to IPOB’s sit-at-home order

Sirens blared as police convoys paraded the streets, local security outfits deployed to major markets and surveillance helicopters flew overhead.

Streets were deserted. Shops, schools and banks were shut.

Residents huddled together discussing the exercise while children and youth converted asphalt roads into make-shift football grounds.

These were the sights in some major cities in South-east Nigeria Wednesday following the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Worst hit were Aba and Onitsha, the commercial cities of Abia and Anambra states respectively.

In other cities like Enugu and Umuahia, there were partial compliance while Abakaliki, Nsukka and Awka showed little evidence of compliance.

IPOB was proscribed last year by Southeast Governor’s Forum in the wake of the violence that greeted a military exercise in the geopolitical zone.

The army claimed the exercise was to curb criminal activities in the region but many believed it was launched to curb the growing influence of the pro-Biafra group and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Last year’s sit-at-home was successful in most states of the region and this forced the military to take steps to clip the wings of the secessionist group.

Stalwarts of the group clashed with the army in Umuahia and Aba state, leading to loss of lives and disappearance of Mr Kanu and his parents after the army invaded their country home in Umuahia.

Since then, Mr Kanu’s whereabouts remains unknown with IPOB and the army trading counter claims.

The Federal High Court in Abuja later proscribed IPOB all over Nigeria and declared it a terrorist organisation.

But that has not stopped the group from carrying on with its activities secretly.

Another pro-Biafra group, Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), clarified that it was not part of Wednesday’s sit-at-home. It however, said it was not against it.

Premium Times’ James Eze brings a summary of how the day went in the South-east.

Abia

Aba, the major commercial city of Abia State, was on lockdown Wednesday as residents observed the sit-at-home order of the proscribed IPOB to mark the 2018 Biafra Day celebration.

But it was a different scenario in the capital of the state, Umuahia, where business activities were in full swing.

Aba turned into a ghost town as major markets including the famous Ariaria International market did not open.

The streets of Aba were also deserted as commercial transporters parked their vehicles at home, hindering movement by people from one part of the city to another or out of the city.

Banks and schools were shut as parents held back children from school.

Teachers who went to work found the classrooms empty.

“As public servants, we are bound to report for work but we can’t force pupils to come to school if their parents did not allow them,” a primary school teacher who did not want her name mentioned said.

She said though “the idea of remembering Biafra heroes is good, we cannot observe it as public holiday since government has not sanctioned it”.

In sharp contrast to last year’s exercise residents of Umahia did not observe the exercise.

Banks opened for business while many private schools opened but later asked students to go home to avoid danger should violence break out later in the day. But as at press time, the city was calm with people going about their normal businesses

Anambra

Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra was completely shut down as traders and other residents observed the order to sit at home.

The order recorded complete compliance in Onitsha as the markets including the popular Onitsha Main Market was shut.

Also banks, motor parks, schools, filling stations and other businesses did not open.

A resident, Geoffrey Anioke who runs a filling station, told our correspondent that since the markets did not open there was no need for other businesses to open.

“The drivers will not see passengers since the markets did not open. This will also affect filing stations and the ripple effect continues. The markets more or less powers the other major businesses including the banks so if they had opened they wont have had customers”, he said.

Apart from bus drivers, it was also gathered that motorcycle and tricycle operators complied with the order forcing people who ventured out to trek long distances to their destinations.

However, in Awka, capital of Anambra State, government offices and other public places, including banks, schools, markets, motor parks and private offices all conducted their businesses without molestation.

Some residents who spoke with Premium Times called on IPOB to refrain from making the Federal Government regard the region as ingrate.

Charles Igwebuke, a civil servant, said it was high time such directives were not allowed to get to public domain.

“In the first place, which national tabloid published the directive that gave it the widespread it enjoys? For that is the beginning of the problem,” he said.

“It has come to a point where every publishing house in the country should abide with the things that unite us as a nation rather than the things that separate us or be sectioned,” he said.

Ifeoma Nnameka, a banker, on her part said that though she heard the sit-at-home order, her employer never informed her to stay away from work.

“I work with a bank that does not take nonsense from staff that don’t do what they should do in regard to this kind of directives that was issued by faceless individuals.

“There is no way I can obey such when the government that is in place to save lives and property didn’t say so and my bank has warned us not to obey such directives that they are not aware of,” she said.

Kassim Ajayi, a tailor, said he opened his shop for business when he saw his fellow Igbo brothers doing same.

“I have to open for business when all shops around me have opened for the day, for I heard on radio when the state government directed all residents to go about their normal day’s work without fear,” Mr Ajayi said.

The state’s Head of Service, Larry Uduh, had earlier issued a statement that Governor Willie Obiano directed that work resumes on Wednesday (May 30) after the Democracy Day public holiday on May 29.

Enugu Police nab pro Biafra group BZM’ s leader, 20 others

The Police in Enugu confirmed the arrest of leader of Biafran Zionists Movement (BZM) on Wednesday in Enugu metropolis.

Premium Times gathered that members of the group in the morning made a futile attempt to take over Enugu Government House.

Led by their self-acclaimed President, Benjamin Onwuka, the group which marched from Bisalla Road was heading to the Government House as early as 7 a.m to hoist the Biafran flags.

But upon their arrival at the Government House gate, they were rounded up by security operatives.

A combined team of security operatives made up of the SSS, anti-terrorism squad, mobile policemen, SARS, among others carried out the operation.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the police, Ebere Amaraizu, said 20 other members of the group were also arrested.

“The Enugu State command of the Nigeria Police Force through its operatives today nabbed the leader of Biafran Zionist Movement identified as one Bejamin Onwuka alongside with some of his members numbering about twenty one”.

“Onwuka has been standing trial in a court of competent court of jurisdiction over his alleged role in murder, armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms before he resurfaced today but fell into the hands of the eagle-eyed security operatives of the command.

“He was nabbed within the Enugu metropolis alongside his members based on the intelligence information. Suspects are helping the operatives in their investigations.

Mr Amaraizu said the sit at home called by IPOB and other groups failed in the state.

“There was movement of vehicles, commuters and traders within and outside the metropolis contrary to the early threat and order of sit-at-home.

“Security operatives were at strategic places just as shops, media houses, markets and banks were open to the members of the public,” he said.

Residents of Enugu partially observed the sit-at-home order.

This was even as another Pro-Biafra group, Biafra National Guard (BNG), said it had launched a transitional government.

Although some markets were opened for business, just few traders or buyers were seen in the vicinity.

Almost all the markets in the city including Ogbete, Timber, Artisan, coal camp spear parts markets, among others were affected by the order.

Even the street shop keepers were not as functional as obtained in normal days while some civil servants failed to report to work. They cited transportation hiccups for not doing so.

Commercial transportation was not in full swing even though there was no enforcement on anybody or groups to comply with the Biafra directive.

An auto electrician at Coal Camp markets, who gave his name simply as Mr. Izuchukwu said he prepared to go out for business but could not find transportation from his Agbani Road residence.

“So I went back to stay at home. Tomorrow we continue with work,” he said.

Nsukka residents ignore order

Resident of Nsukka in Enugu State ignored the order as they went about their businesses.

Government offices, banks schools, market and shops all opened for business.

Commercial buses, tricycles and motorcycles were busy picking and dropping passengers at their destinations and bus-stops.

A trader, Jude Amadi, said IPOB has no right to give him such order as they will not feed his family.

“I thought government has proscribed IPOB. I do not know the right the group has to order people to sit at home, ” he said.

Peter Ozioko, a driver also said he was not aware of the order as he has no business with the pro-Biafra group.

“It is what I get daily from driving this bus that I use to feed my family and take care of other responsibilities as a man. Even if I heard about the sit at home order, I will be very foolish to obey it because the so-called IPOB will not give me money to buy food for my family today. What we need in Nigeria is peace and progress not what will scatter the country”. he said.

For Regina Urama, what the country need now is restructuring so as to achieve stronger economy and not tribal agitations to divide the country

According to her, tribal agitations for separation would not solve the problem of the country but cause more problems.

“We must learn how to live in peace with one another in this country irrespective of tribe, religion or political affiliation”, she said.

Sit-at-home flops in Ebonyi

The order also flopped in Ebonyi State as citizens in the state went about their normal businesses without harassment and intimidation

Governor David Umahi during his May 29th Democracy celebration warned that any trader that closed their shop in line with the directive of IPOB would forfeit it forever

When Premium Times visited the Abakaliki Main market, meat market and Kpirikpiri markets within the metropolis around 9a.m, they were all opened for business.

Also a joint patrol of major security agencies with over 20 vehicles were seen patrolling the streets of the city to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

Later in the day, a police surveillance helicopter flew over the city.

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor David Umahi on Internal Security, Kenneth Ugbala, later on Wednesday spoke with reporters on the situation.

“I have gone round the two major businesses area in the state. I visited the banks, Abakpa main market, the parks where commuters do their businesses and I am happy that in Ebonyi State, we have full compliance to the directive of government. Even in the rural communities or areas, we don’t have any challenge at all.

“The little little cases that cropped in had been resolved in the rural areas; we want to thank God; we want to advise those championing the cause of IPOB or MASSOB to follow the normal process that will be in line with the law and we had always said that in Ebonyi State here, we had been economically disadvantaged.

“We cannot leave our productive periods to engage in nothing because we have suffered criminal marginalisation from the states we were carved out from and we want to meet up and we cannot sit at home when we are supposed to be working.

“The oil is drying up. We have to work; go to farm and do our business transactions to make sure we keep the state moving; we want to thank Ebonyians for the full compliance to the directive of the Governor. I think today has been awesome and we thank God for it.”

However, major transport companies like Peace Mass and Ebotrans as at the time of this report were not loading to Aba, Onitsha and Port Harcourt where they felt people would obey the sit at home order of IPOB.

A driver for one of the companies said they were afraid of being attacked in those three cities for flouting the order.

The major streets like Water Walks, Ogoja road and Gunning road were busy and had heavy vehicular traffic like any other day.

Meanwhile, there was zero compliance by Abakaliki residents to the sit-at-home as government offices, shops, private and public schools, banks as well as commercial activities within the Abakaliki metropolis remained opened for businesses and operation.

A shop owner at the popular Abakpa Main Market in Abakaliki, Lawrence Obiekwena, said he defied the order because market officials said the market would not be closed for business.

He maintained that people should not be forced or intimidated to observe the sit – at – home order.

MASSOB accuses Ebonyi govt of intimidating residents to shun sit-at-home

MASSOB accused Ebonyi state government of intimidating residents of the state into flouting the sit-at-home order called by IPOB.

Speaking to Premium Times, leader of the group, Uchenna Madu, said residents of the state wanted to take part but were intimidated by the state government not to do so.

He was referring to Governor Umahi’s speech on Tuesday at the Oruta Ngele Stadium Abakaliki during Democracy Day where he urged the people to disregard the order.

Mr Umahi had threatened that anyone who failed to open their shop for business would be made to forfeit the shop to government.

Reacting to the sit at home, Mr Madu said despite the intimidation the people still believe in the Biafran cause.

He said though his group MASSOB was not part of the sit-at-home, it was not against it either.

According to him, MASSOB decided to hold a convention in other to diversify the celebration.

The convention held at the Rojenny Sports Stadium Conference Hall in Oba, Idemili South local government area of Anambra state.

“We are having a convention to commemorate the 51 year anniversary of Biafra.

“We were not part of it (sit-at-home) but at the same time we are not against it. We wanted to have a colouration, a new initiative where we converge, interface, discus and deliberate. So though the sit at home was ordered by IPOB, we are not against that.

“All these things are part of Biafran celebration and struggle, different groups have their own way of celebrating it. So it is also a welcome exercise, we have been doing it and we are gong to it next time.

“The fact remains that today all over the world, the people of Biafra celebrated their day. We don’t believe in failure , some people are saying it flopped or wasn’t observed. But as far as some people that believe in Biafra observed the sit at home and many others attended the convention we are having shows that they believe in us, it shows that we are winning and that we are prevailing.”

"Living in Bondage" Here"s all we know about upcoming sequel to Nollywood classic movie

"Living in Bondage" Here"s all we know about upcoming sequel to Nollywood classic movie

A sequel to cult 90s horror thriller "Living in Bondage" is coming to cinemas, with Ramsey Nouah lined up to direct it

In 2015, it was announced that a sequel to the 1992 classic Nollywood movie, "Living in Bondage" was in the works.

The sequel, which will also mark the official directorial debut of veteran actor Ramsey  Nouah, is a follow-up to the 1992 cult drama thriller of the same name.

The original movie told the story of a man, Andy, who sacrifices the person he loves the most (his wife, Merit) for wealth. After her death, her ghost returns to hunt him.

26 years after its release, "Living in  Bondage" is still in the pop culture landscape. It didn"t only inspire a passionate following, it also kick-started the popular money ritual plot in Nollywood.

The movie is easily one of the top three movies of any true Nollywood fan from the 90s. Many even argue that it kicked off the movie industry "Nollywood" and the home video market boom in the 90s.Nollywood classic home video Living in Bondage is getting a remake

Nollywood classic home video Living in Bondage is getting a remake

Nollywood is no stranger to sequels. We have had sequels to commercially successful originals such as "The Wedding Party," "Jenifa"s Diary" and "Wives on Strike." However, creating sequels to nostalgic films from the 90s is new.

Most originals are held in such high esteem that many sequels don’t stand a chance. However, it takes a great script, director and actors to ensure that a sequel doesn"t simply recycle everything viewers already know about the original.

So for "Living in Bondage: Breaking Free," it was very important to Nouah that the sequel appeals to the demography of those who saw the original movie and those who didn"t.

"When we wrote the story, we realized that it was lopsided. We were trying to catch the demography of today who go to the cinema [and those who] have not seen the original moie. So we were trying to kind of blend it," the actor told  newsmen during an interview.

Trying to use the original to create the same feel for the sequel was not an easy task. "That"s why it took so long," Nouah said about the sequel which was first announced in 2015 after Nouah and his entrepreneur friend, Charles Okpaleke, acquired the license to write from Kenneth Nnebue, who helmed the 1992 film.Ramsey Nouah on new Nollywood movie Crazy People

Cast and crew of "Living in Bondage" sequel

The original starred household names like Kenneth Okonkwo as Andy, Nnenna Nwabueze as Merit, Francis Agu as Ichie Millionaire, Bob Manuel Udokwu as Mike, Ngozi Nwosu as Ego, Kanayo O. Kanayo as Chief Omego, Rita Nzelu as Tina among others.

It has been confirmed that Kenneth Okwonkwo, Bob-Manuel Udokwu and  Kanayo O. Kanayo would return for the sequel.

New additions include Ramsey Nouah, who would be taking up a villainous role. There"s also Enyinna Nwigwe in an unknown role.

"We are going to roll out principal photography in July. We have on board too one of the top directors in Nigeria, Steve Gukas, who directed "93 Days." But he is now an executive producer and producer."

Kenneth Okonkwo and Enyinna Nwigwe will star in "Living in Bondage: Breaking Free

Release date for "Living in Bondage" sequel

There"s no release date for the "Living in Bondage" sequel, but  depending on the availability of windows in the cinema, Nouah hopes to capture the December market.

Breaking News: Mixed Reactions Greet IPOB’s Sit-At-Home Directive in South-east

Breaking News: Mixed Reactions Greet IPOB’s Sit-At-Home Directive in South-east

Mixed reactions wednesday trailed the directive of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to residents of the South-east and South-south geopolitical zones to sit at home.

In Anambra State, though Onitsha was shut down completely, Awka remained lively with businesses, schools, banks and markets operating normally, without recourse to the sit-at-home.

THISDAY which moved round the capital city of Awka yesterday morning confirmed that while the exercise started on a good note, with motorists and workers staying away from the roads during the morning rush hours, the order was later shunned with markets opening for normal businesses.

As at 7a.m, when markets in the state usually open, traders were still left stranded as market security officials refused to open the gate, insisting that it was waiting for orders from their chairman to either open or not.
There was however jubilation among the traders at 7:50a.m., when the gate was opened for business.

Roadside traders and shops which were previously closed however opened for business at 9a.m., giving a full indication that the order had flopped.

Security men were also seen moving in convoy, obviously to ensure that no one was molested into closing shop by members of IPOB, who had earlier threatened to blacklist anyone seen on the road.
Most pupils who could not make it to school were called personally by their teachers to come to school as there was no holiday.

Mr. Henry Okwu, a trader at Eke Awka market, said: “I just came back from my children’s school, where I went to drop them off, after receiving several calls from their teachers, asking me to bring them.”
The situation was however different in the banking sector.

As at 10a.m., most of the new generation banks visited were under lock and key, with no worker in sight.
Frustrated customers formed long queues in front of their gates with the hope that soon, they would eventually open.

A source said the staff had resumed, but were trying to be careful to avoid being attacked by urchins.
At about 11a.m., as earlier predicted, banks at Ugwu Orji area where there is a high concentration of banks and also along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, where a lot of new generation banks have their branches, started to receive customers.

At the state secretariat, civil servants trickled into the complex from as early as 8a.m as they resumed for work.
In Abia State, the commercial city of Aba was totally shut down in observance of the sit-at-home order.
But the situation was different in the capital city of Umuahia where business activities were in full swing.
Aba was a shadow of itself as all the market places did not witness business activities.

The famous Ariaria International Market was shunned by traders who did not open their shops for business activities.

The streets of Aba were also deserted as commercial transporters parked their vehicles at home, making it impossible for people to commute from one part of the city to another or to move out of the city.

Commercial banks in Aba also shut their gates against customers, fearful of likely eruption of violence.

Apparently fearful of possible outbreak of violence, parents kept their children/wards at home thereby depriving both public and private schools their normal academic activities. Teachers who turned up for work could not teach as the classrooms were empty.

However, unlike in the last edition of the sit-at-home directive where residents of Umuahia largely observed it, the situation was different this time around with the city bustling with business activities.

On their part, banks were apprehensive while attending to customers.

Some banks even closed their gates in the early hours of the day before they later opened their doors for businesses when they observed that the coast was clear.

With their harrowing experience of the operation python dance carried out by the army on September 14, 2017 during which many young men and women were killed at the residence of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Umuahia residents are still apprehensive of any action that could attract military response.

It was observed that some private schools that opened in the morning later asked pupils to return home to avoid danger should violence breakout later in the day. But as at press time the city was calm with people going about their normal businesses.

Meanwhile, Onitsha proved a different kettle of fish all together as markets, banks, schools and other public places were all shut down.

The streets of Onitsha remained deserted, from the Niger bridgehead which usually was a beehive of activities to Nkpor and other parts of the commercial city were totally locked down.
In Ebonyi State, there was minimal compliance to the sit-at-home order.

The minimal compliance was sequel to the threat issued by the state Governor, David Umahi that any trader who obeyed the directive of the separatist group would forfeit his or her shop to the state government.

However, there were skeletal services at major transport companies in the state, as passengers were sent back home.
Two companies, Onitsha South Mass Transit and Peace Mass Transit closed operations to Onitsha, Aba and Port Harcourt.

A driver with Onitsha South Motors said that the company closed the designated routes for fear of attack on the way.

Meanwhile, other segments visited by THISDAY including Abakpa main market, Motor spare parts, Rice mill had full business activities without any hitches.

Joint security operatives were also seen patrolling the capital city to ensure no victimisation of people for non-compliance.

In Enugu State, a partial compliance was observed with the sit-at-home order.
Though banks and other commercial centres continued with their business activities, it was evident that major roads and streets within the metropolis were literally deserted as vehicular movements were skeletal.

Also, the popular Ogbette market was opened for business, as most shops and markets stalls within the market were under lock and key.

The state secretariat was also without the usual beehive of activities as most workers stayed away from their duty posts.

The presence of security operatives was also noticed at strategic points even as air force helicopters continued to patrol the state aerozone apparently to checkmate activities of the IPOB members who might take advantage of the situation in town to cause mayhem.

Breaking News: US sizes up Kim ahead of possible nuclear summit

Breaking News: US sizes up Kim ahead of possible nuclear summit

While Secretary of State Mike Pompeo"s recent meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un were billed primarily as diplomatic missions, the face-to-face encounters have also served as valuable intelligence gathering opportunities that are helping shape US officials" understanding of the reclusive dictator and guide ongoing talks between the two countries.

A series of constantly updated US intelligence assessments have determined that Kim will come to the negotiating table with his own red lines revolving around a single calculation: How much, if any, of his nuclear weapons program does he give up while still assuring the survival of his regime and his singular position in power?

These intelligence assessments, largely led by the CIA"s Korea Mission Center, are examining all issues that could impact Kim"s thinking and approach to the negotiations, including the impact of US-backed economic development how Kim can maintain the loyalty of his top military commanders. The issue of Kim"s concern for his safety and survival was even addressed by President Donald Trump in public comments when he guaranteed the Kim"s safety if he agreed to denuclearize.

The US intelligence community has been working to understand what makes Kim tick since he took power in 2011 -- gathering details related to his psychological makeup, leadership style and personality in order to support the policymakers tasked with dealing with North Korea"s nuclear weapons program.

And that effort has only been amplified in recent weeks as US officials continue to lay the groundwork for on-again, off-again talks between Kim and Trump in Singapore on June 12.

Despite Trump"s threat last week to call off the summit, the White House has indicated that preparations are still under way.

Representatives from Washington and Pyongyang have been dispatched in recent days to conduct various meetings, and in his most significant gesture so far, Kim has sent his former intelligence chief and close confidante Kim Yong Chol to New York to meet with Pompeo.

Even after Trump made his cancellation announcement, Pompeo has continued to work on preparations for a potential summit. Defense Secretary James Mattis has also continued to publicly emphasize diplomacy led by Pompeo.

Those familiar with Pompeo"s thinking have said that his meeting with Chol will set some of the terms and agenda for a potential summit -- but most importantly Pompeo loyalists believe the meeting is a sign that he is the senior US official, short of the President, that Kim is willing to work with.

If Pompeo is included at the summit table, his role will include ensuring both Kim and Trump keep to the agenda and do not get unduly distracted by their rhetoric, one US official said.

"Secretary Pompeo has spent more time with the "living God" than any other American ... Kim has been sheltered from foreign view very deliberately up until now," Nick Eberstadt, American Enterprise Institute scholar and adviser to National Bureau of Asian Research, told CNN.

While sources have relayed various rumors about Kim to intelligence officials over the years, Eberstadt said the US can be most confident in assessments regarding North Korea"s "objectives because those haven"t really changed between three generations of Kims."

On the same page?

While US intelligence officials have determined Kim is unlikely to completely surrender his nuclear program as part of a negotiation with the US, Trump has laid out a red line of his own -- saying any summit must include a guarantee that North Korea"s weapons can no longer threaten the US or its allies.

But a series of US intelligence assessments have concluded that while Kim could give up some weapons including warheads and missiles, he may not be willing to give up his capabilities to regenerate his program.

That would include keeping scientific, engineering and technical capabilities and personnel which would be seen by Kim as his insurance policy to ensure he could stay in power, officials said.

"He is not going to do anything that allows him to become vulnerable," one official told CNN. He also could decide to keep some hidden weapons inventories, officials acknowledged.

So far, US officials say, the Kim regime hasn"t taken any steps on denuclearization that could not be readily reversed. They said the May 24 destruction of underground tunnels to test nuclear devices was a "serious gesture." But it "doesn"t foreclose further testing" at other locations, one official said.

US satellite imagery recorded technical equipment and gear being removed from the site prior to the destruction of the tunnels, three US defense officials say. "They are not going to give up anything valuable," one official said.

In addition the US has preliminarily identified other potential sites where the North Koreans could dig new underground tunnels for testing.

Kim a "rational actor" with his position largely set

Intelligence assessments have concluded that Kim is coming to the table with his position largely set with regards to what he will give up and what he plans to retain or possibly hide away.

It"s not clear what security guarantees the US could give Kim that would convince him to give up his entire program, including those scientific, engineering and technical capabilities including underground sites that could shield key items.

That idea is largely supported by the US intelligence community"s assessment that Kim is a "rational actor" motivated by the survival of his own regime.

Pompeo, who took a leading role on the North Korea issue even before he was confirmedas secretary of state, has had direct contact with Kim on two occasions -- providing unique insight into the isolated leader"s personal makeup that also supports the latest findings from the intelligence community.

Prior to his first trip to Pyongyang last month, then-CIA director Pompeo said that the US intelligence community considered Kim to be a "rational actor" and there has been no indication that assessment has changed in the wake of his second meeting with the North Korean leader earlier this month.

"My personal view is that the assessment hasn"t changed: he"s a rational actor who has consolidated power; he"s in control," said Ambassador Joseph R. DeTrani, who previously served at the Department of State as the special envoy for Six-Party Talks with North Korea.

A former intelligence official specializing in Asia who maintains contact with current officials told CNN: "I"m sure [CIA] would stick by the line that Kim just wants to die peacefully of old age."

The CIA did not respond to CNN"s request for a comment.

But Pompeo himself has said that the meeting not only supported the intelligence community"s existing assessment, but that Kim"s behavior indicated he was sincere about pursuing a path toward denuclearization.

"I did get a sense that he was serious," Pompeo said.

"The economic pressure that has been put in place by this global effort that President Trump has led has led him to believe that it is in his best interests to come to the table and talk about denuclearization," he added.

Currently the highest-ranking US administration official to meet with Kim, Pompeo"s observations support the idea that Kim is not irrational or crazy -- an image that has been perpetuated at times by the media, some lawmakers and even President Trump himself, according to Bruce Klingner, a former deputy division chief for Korea at the CIA who"s now a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation

"He was painted as someone who the US could not count on to not start a war," Klingner said. "We are seeing some of that now as people realize that Kim, contrary to perception, is not crazy or irrational."

Value of direct contact

North Korea"s history of isolation has traditionally forced US intelligence agencies to utilize second-hand information gathered through interviews with individuals who have had direct contact Kim during his life.

Analysts try to put together a profile of a leader based on readouts from people who have met with them and reading about them to get a sense of their psychology and how they make decisions, Klingner said.

With an isolated leader like Kim, intelligence is rarely collected directly from the source, making Pompeo"s contact so valuable.

"Having Pompeo in a room with Kim provides direct contact and offers insight into Kim"s mannerisms, how capable he is as a leader, and how much he relies on others," according to Klingner.

"Having direct access to someone should provide a lot better insight," he said.

Pompeo is not specifically trained to interpret body language indicators or other subtle details that may have presented themselves in these meetings, but he was accompanied by intelligence officials who were taking note of these cues, a source familiar told CNN.

Two US officials have told CNN that Kim was very straightforward, professional, calm and on top of his brief in his meeting with Pompeo, adding that he knew and could discuss the issues in detail.

And one source briefed on the matter told CNN that it was clear to Pompeo that Kim understands how to present himself as a fairly normal politician.

But while those who meet with Kim often determine he is not necessarily insane, Klingner warned that the difference between those misconceptions and the impression Kim gives off in person can also lead to an overreaction.

"When someone meets with Kim, they often come back sort of in awe -- realizing that he is not the crazy guy in the basement -- and with the conclusion that the US can deal with him," he said.

"But due to the fact that they often go into the meeting with a misconception of Kim based on caricatures from outside intelligence community, the perceptions often shifts from one extreme to another," he added.

Pompeo, however, has expressed a sense of cautious optimism about Kim"s intentions.

Even after Trump threatened to cancel the scheduled summit last week, Pompeo said he was "hopeful" discussions could get back on track, adding there was "little doubt" in his mind that Kim understood the scope of what the US was asking for with regards to the permanent denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

He has also cautioned that North Korea has made and broken promises in the past.

"President Trump has made clear we are going to work to get a meeting set up, the two of them will meet. In the event it fails, respectfully, President Trump will walk away and the pressure will remain but in the event we reach a resolution it would be a wonderful thing for the world," Pompeo said last week after Trump threatened to cancel the summit.

One source with knowledge of the situation told CNN that while some progress has already been made to this point, there is still a general understanding within the administration that the North Korean regime remains unpredictable -- as it has been for decades.

And despite Pompeo"s assurances that he believes Kim is serious about wanting to negotiate, some within the administration remain deeply skeptical about North Korea"s intentions -- specifically their willingness to give up their nuclear weapons, the source said.

Trump the wild card

It remains unclear as to how Trump is personally preparing for the potential sitdown with Kim, but he has told advisers he"s confident in his ability to sway the North Korean leader in person.

But the President"s push for a face-to-face meeting with Kim is raising concerns that he may disregard the vast intelligence resources provided on Kim in favor of leaning on his own instincts.

An intelligence profile of Kim is provided for Trump in his daily briefing, according to DeTrani, but it remains unclear as to whether the President regularly reads intelligence reports provided to him.

"That profile includes intelligence related to Kim"s personality, negotiation tactics, personal history and potential weaknesses so that the President might be able to anticipate certain moves once they are in the same room," DeTrani said.

Ultimately, intelligence analysts are trying to enable policymakers to make the most informed decisions possible, but "at the end of the day, you can lead a horse to water but you can"t force someone to read the briefing," according to Klingner.

"Trump has thrown out the usual diplomatic playbook and the concept of bureaucratic timelines," Klingner said. "Traditionally, the US would not deploy a president to negotiate terms but to sign the agreement once the details were in place."

"Trump doing the opposite, implementing a top-down approach," he added. "He"s not going to go through tons of background materials or meetings with experts but instead, as he wrote in Art of the Deal, goes with his gut."
